Castilleja del Campo
by Shenai Martínez Fernández
The origins of the town of Castilleja del Campo date back to the Roman Empire, as can be seen from the remains of pottery, tombs and mosaics found in the area. The village was also a key point in the defensive strategy against Christian incursions in the Muslim period.
During the months of October and November, Castilleja del Campo celebrates the ‘Otoño Cultural’ (Cultural Autumn), an event that includes Music Week, Children's Week and the Amateur Theatre Festival.
One of the most picturesque monuments in this municipality is the so-called ‘Cruzdel Plato’, a brick building with a wrought iron cross, located in the place where the traditional May crosses were held, a celebration that is no longer organised.
In Castilleja del Campo we can also visit the church of San Miguel Arcángel, a beautiful baroque construction from the 18th century with impressive neoclassical altarpieces.
Other places of interest not to be missed are the Hacienda del Marquesado de Castilleja del Campo and the Museo de Aperos de Labranza, which exhibits old farming tools.
Among the handicrafts of this municipality we can highlight the painting works, especially the painting of handmade fans, and bobbin lace.
The most typical of Castilleja del Campo's gastronomy are the roscos de petaca, sweets admired throughout the region; other confectionery products worthy of mention are the pestiños, rosas and torrijas.
Lovers of good food can enjoy in this village a good lamb stew, migas with sardines, tostón with grilled sardines, stews and a wonderful fresh goat's cheese.
The patron saint festivities are held in this municipality between 5 and 11 August in honour of San Miguel Arcángel and Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso. On this occasion, the streets are decorated with flowers made of tissue paper and a pilgrimage to the countryside is organised, along with games and children's activities.
On 29 September, the day of San Miguel Arcángel, there is an evening with a fire bull and on the day of Corpus Christi the streets are decorated with poplars and sedges.
Castilleja del Campo is about 37 kilometres from Seville, from where it can be reached by the A-66 road taking exit 17B in the direction of Huelva. Once on the A-49, take exit 28 in the direction of Carrión, and following the A-8153 road, you will have reached your destination.
