La Puebla del Río

LA PUEBLA DEL RÍO

La Puebla del Río is currently best known for its rice production. It is also the birthplace of Morante de La Puebla, one of the most famous bullfighters today, as well as the rejoneadores (mounted bullfighters) Ángel and Rafael Peralta. The town has a population of around 12,000.

HISTORY

The Guadalquivir River plays a significant role in the cultivation of large areas of rice in the region. Although it is speculated that the original population nucleus arose in the Bronze Age, many Latin remains have been found.

Prosperity continued during Moorish domination, when it was the main gateway to Seville for most basic provisions, including vegetables, fruit, poultry, meat and fish. It was later taken over by King Fernando III of Castile, who handed the alquería (farm) over to the Council of Seville to control the area's trade. They named it La Guardia.

King Alfonso X changed the name to Puebla and divided it between 200 knights, thereby separating it from the Council of Seville and enabling it to acquire its own Town Hall. In 1594, La Puebla del Río became part of the Kingdom of Seville in the Axarafe region.
