Almería province

Alborán Natural Area

The Isla de Alborán is situated in the Mediterranean sea 48km from the port of Adra on the Almeria coast and 39km from the Spanish enclave of Melilla on the African coast. The protected area covers the island itself and a band of sea around it. It is noteworthy for its rich marine life, which includes one of the most threatened marine species in the Mediterranean, the limpet patella ferrunginea, as well as bottle-nose dolphins and several species of coral.

Punta Entinas-Sabinar Natural Area

Southwest of the coastal resort Roquetas del Mar is a 15km-long strip of protected coastline, the Punta Entinas-Sabinar Natural Area and Reserve. Like Albufera de Adra Natural Reserve along the coast, this is a wildlife haven encircled by a sea of plastic from the intensive agriculture that surrounds it. Even in the height of summer the beach is often deserted and its isolation makes it an ideal spot for birdwatching.

Karst en Yesos de Sorbas Natural Area

Like the nearby Desierto de Tabernas Natural Area, this is a dramatically eroded lunar landscape of semi-arid desert covering 2,375ha, designated a protected area in 1989. It is also Spain's most important karst landscape composed of gypsum (yeso), and one of the best examples of its kind in the world.

Isla de Terreros e Isla Negra Natural Monument

These two volcanic islets close to the Almeria coastline are an important breeding site for the European storm petrel and Cory's shearwater. Measuring 11,150m², the steep-sided Isla de Terreros is the largest of a series of small, rocky islands located along the coastline of Almeria. It is 700m from the shore, while the smaller Isla Negra (6,015m²) is only 50m from the mainland.

Golf Valle del Este

Europe’s second desert course, opened in 2002, was designed by José Canales. The small, circular tees are raised, giving a good view of wide open fairways that have to be reached over the arid land in between, and the greens are ample with multiple pin positions. There are three par-5 holes. Plan well on the 3rd, a par-4, as the fairway bordered by water offers various strategic points.

Playa Macenas Golf Resort

Natural hazards as well as artificial ones are brought into play in the unique layout of this course. Suitable for all handicaps, it is stimulating and challenging, requiring concentration but very rewarding for good shots. The ample greens have a selection of pin positions.

Desert Springs Golf Club

Europe’s first desert course was designed by Peter McEvoy in true Arizona style with about half the grass areas normally found on other courses. There is an abundance of cactus, springs, rocks, water hazards and dry river beds and while the terrain is fairly flat there are many sandstone outcrops.

Almerimar Golf

Golfers visiting Almerimar can look forward to a course of wide fairways, with a profusion of trees and plants which afford plenty of shade and, at the same time, serve as natural hazards, protecting the fast greens. The course was designed during the period that Gary Player had just embarked on a second career in golf course architecture and was working in association with the experienced Ron Kirby.

Gardens in Almeria

The main park in Almeria itself is the Parque Nicolas Salmeron, in the city centre. It is named after the Almerian politician and philosopher who served (albeit briefly - a month and a half) as the president of the First Republic in 1873. The large, landscaped park is made up of two parts: the Parque Viejo (Paseo de San Luis and los Jardines del Malecon), with lots of ficus and terebinth trees; and the Parque Nuevo, built when the port was extended in 1924, with palms and ornamental plants. The two parts are separated by a pillared fountain called La Fuente de los Peces, on calle Real.
