Cordoba City Carnival

The city of Córdoba has a recipe all its own when it comes to the carnival. Whereas it is common to elect a King and Queen of the carnival, in Córdoba history is honoured with the selection of a Sultan and a Sultana. If you are a fan of carnival celebrations, this is definitely one corner of Andalucia worth exploring this time of year.

Parador de Cordoba

The Parador in Córdoba is in the northern part of the city of Córdoba, and provides the perfect starting point for discovering the wonders of Córdoba province. It is built upon the ruins of the summer palace of Abderramán I. Nestled into the foothills of the Córdoban mountain range and surrounded by trees and greenery this location is reported to be about 4 degrees cooler than the provincial capital.

Lucio Anneo Seneca

Latin philosopher, playwright, politician and prominent writer, Lucio Anneo Seneca was born in Cordoba. He was the son of the Roman rhetorician Marco (Lucio) Anneo, better known as Seneca "El Viejo". Lucio studied philosophy in Rome where he was deeply influenced by the teachings of the Stoics.

This park in Villafranca de Cordoba, near Cordoba city, has seven rides, including a black hole and kamikaze run, plus big kids' pool with small play feature, and "beach" pool. The water park has both VIP and naturist areas - VIPs get a raised shady platform with sunloungers, table and chairs, for six people. Restaurant and snack bar with shady outdoor seating area.

Parque Zoológico Cordoba

Cordoba Zoo opened in 1967 and was one of the first official zoos in Spain. Between 2003 - 2007, the zoo went under a huge renovation and is now well-known for its research, species conservation and education.

Balcon de Cordoba

This four-star hotel in a traditional 17th-century Cordoban house, one street away from the Mezquita, is classic-contemporary in style. This large five-star hotel has a contemporary design, with light-coloured wood and sleek, modern touches such as statement lights and chairs. A newly-built, six-storey building with distinctive exterior of perforated, rusty metal, it has stylish furniture and a feeling of space and light.

The four-star hotel features a traditional, leafy arcaded Andalusian courtyard with cobblestone and bricks floor, where meals are served in fine weather, as well as a garden with wrought-iron benches surrounding a fountain, shaded by orange trees.

Palacio del Bailio

Part of the excellent Spanish Hospes group (they also have hotels in Granada and Sevilla), known for their sensitive conversions of period buildings, excellent food and first-class spas, this was the first five-star hotel in the historic centre of Cordoba. Located near the Plaza de Colon, the hotel offers modern comfort in a historic setting.

Cordoba City Top Ten

May is the best month to visit Cordoba, with its riot of colourful and fragrant celebrations. The floral excitements kick off with the Battle of the Flowers parade, followed by the Cruces de Mayo - a competition of flower-decorated crosses, between city neighbourhoods, then the Patios Festival - traditional Andalucian houses whose interior courtyards are festooned with potted flowers and plants, bursting with blooms.

Seville Gate

The Gate of Seville is of considerable historical interest standing as an original fortified tower and an early entry gate to the Alcazar or fortress from the west. Fragments date back to the 10th century. The wall here was erected by Christians in the 14th and 15th century along with the barbican and moat.
