La Pequeña Africa - Little Africa Animal Reserve

Little Africa Animal Reserve (Reserva Animal La Pequeña Africa) is a zoo located in the neighbourhood of Los Ángeles, next to the village of Jimena de la Frontera. It was created to help conserve part of the region’s (and even the country’s) natural heritage, whilst at the same time allowing those who enjoy wildlife and nature to do so by being in direct contact with it.

The zoo keeps animals that come from five different continents over a wide and tree covered area next to the Alcornocales Natural Park, in the temperate Mediterranean climate full of plants and wildlife native to the Cádiz region. This makes the reserve an idyllic place for the animals to live and one of the main promises of the reserve is uphold the environmental balance of the natural park, including the variety of flora and fauna found there, as well as protecting native and other animals in the zoo that are in danger of extinction.

Because of the diverse landscape and scope that the reserve covers, some animals in the zoo can live semi-freely or in controlled areas that are similar to their habitats. All of the staff who care for the animals concern themselves daily with feeding and looking after each and every one of them. This includes catering to the specialised diets of each species, overseeing breeding and following the growth and development of newborn animals.
