Windsurf

The history of windsurfing is short. Apparently, in 1967 a Californian called Hoyle Schwritzer fixed a sail on his surfboard so he could keep moving when there weren't any waves. Today, there are national and international championships, including several regularly held in Tarifa in Cádiz province like the Ballantine's Championship and the Toro Andaluz race which takes place during Semana Santa (Easter Week), which is when the windsurfing season really takes off.

Churriana de la Vega

Churriana de la Vega is a village known as the lungs of Granada city, due to its vast natural environment; it is a breath of fresh air outside of the city. The Muslim legacy is evident in every corner of this village, whose population dates from the 14th century. A very important historical event in the Nasrid era took place here. After a meeting between the Catholic Monarchs and the delegates of Boabdil, Granada was surrendered.

Turón

Turón is a mountain village where visitors can enjoy rich gastronomy as well as cultural activities, and spectacular scenery. The origins of the village are in the Roman era; however, Neolithic tombs and stone axe-heads have also been discovered here. There are also some lead mines which have been abandoned since Roman times, when Turon was on the Via Herculea.

Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park

With a total surface area of 209,920 hectares and covering almost a fifth of Jaén province, this is Spain’s largest protected area and one of its most extensive forested zones. Located in eastern Jaén province, it connects the Sierra Morena and the Subbética mountain ranges. The highest peak in this immense park is Pico Empanada at 2,107m and the entire park is higher than 600m. Recognizing its exceptional ecological importance, it was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1983 and created a natural park in 1989. Barren rocky crests and vast pine forests will strike visitors’ first impressions, but the area’s botanical importance within Andalusia is matched only by the Sierra Nevada, with a fifth of the vascular plants in the Iberian Peninsula found in the Sierra de Cazorla Natural Park.

Chiclana

Just inland from the coast Chiclana sits on a small hill overlooking the marismas (salt marshes). The town dates from 1303, when King Fernando IV of Castille gave the land to Guzman El Bueno, the defender of Tarifa, who was succeeded by the Duques de Medina Sidonia.

Jerez May Horse Fair

The Jerez Horse Fair, known as the Feria del Caballo, is traditionally held during the first or second week in May. It is an exciting and lively event that brings the entire city to the González Hontoria fairground, which covers an area of 52,000 square meters, giving ample space for the finest horses of Jerez, as synonymous with the city as sherry and flamenco, to show off to the crowds.

Coronavirus - Closures

On Friday 13th March Andalucia the regional government had announced that the Alhambra de Granada, Picasso Malaga, Bellas Artes Sevilla, Medinat al-Zahra in Córdoba, Real Alcázar in Sevilla and all the 27 museums and monuments managed by the Junta de Andalucia were closed from immediate effect.

Guadahortuna

In this Granada town you can see what is known as the primo pobre (poor cousin) of the Eiffel Tower, the Puente del Hacho, built at the end of the 19th century by the famous French architect of the iconic Parisian landmark. The iron bridge, which spans 625m and is 50m high, takes us back to the era when trains were the main means of transport between Andalucian towns and cities.
