Toro de Osborne

The Osborne Bull advertising structure for the Spanish wine and food producer is one of twenty copies, which were built and erected between 1957 and the late 1970s. In general, they respond to an evolved layout based on an original drawing by designer Manuel Prieto Benítez (1912-1991), with changes that seek to adapt them to the construction system and process.

New Flamenco - Pata Negra

Formed by the Sevillano duo of brothers Raimundo and Rafael Amador Fernández, Pata Negra took their name (ostensibly) from the prime form of mountain-dried ham, Pata Negra (black hoof) and their direction from the blues, as displayed on their later recording, 'Blues de la Frontera'. The central duo split in the mid-1990s but continue on solo projects.

Cartaya Beaches

The municipality of Cartaya boasts just over 4km of sandy estuary beaches, protected from the winds by a sandy spit of land opposite, just across the Rio Piedras. The beach at this small, friendly fishing village called El Rompido is protected from the open sea by the spit that extends across the Río Piedras estuary.

Isla Cristina Beaches - Playa de la Redondela

La Redondela Beach is located about 2 km north of the town, measuring around 1.5 km in length and is where the Kanina Rock Festival and Virgin of Hope Pilgrimage are celebrated.

The beach has become a favourite with the locals who are seeking peace and quiet. Fishing is banned as well as shell fishing or the from their environment. The beach itself does not belong to the natural area although it is protected by the INIA.

Hornos de Calcinación

The Calcination Furnaces were recently recovered and depict a faithful reflection of the mining past of Lucainena de las Torres. After extraction, the ore was treated in these furnaces, before subsequent transport via rail.

Electricity

The Spanish domestic power system is 220 or 225 volts AC. Standard continental two pin plugs and three pin plugs (with earth) are used. A two pin plug will fit in a three pin socket. Americans with 110V equipment will need a transformer which can be purchased at most ironmongers while the British will only need a plug adapter which is easy to find.

New cross-country ski trail. A new 2,500m-long cross-country (Nordic) trail is located next to the lower chairlift at Virgen de las Nieves, to cater for the growing number of those practising this winter sport.

Explorers - Ferdinand Magellan and Seville

Ferdinand Magellan (c. 1480 - 27 April 1521) was a Portuguese explorer who organised the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, resulting in the first circumnavigation of the Earth, completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano. 

After his proposed expeditions to the Spice Islands (specifically, the Moluccas in modern-day Indonesia) were repeatedly rejected by King Manuel of Portugal, Magellan turned to Charles I, the young King of Spain (and future Holy Roman Emperor).

Marbella has three one-Michelin-starred restaurants , the most famous of which is Dani Garcia's Calima (he is said to be the next Ferran Adria - cherry gazpacho with anchovies and queso fresco snow), in the Hotel Gran Melia Don Pepe. The town is home to over 600 more eateries, making it one of Andalucia's top culinary destinations.

The Alcaicería, Granada City

The Alcaiceria home of the Great Bazaar of Granada, was originally a series of streets between Plaza Nueva and Plaza Bib-Rambla, bursting with stalls selling Arabic silks, spices and other precious goods. Nowadays the only remaining section is Calle Alcaiceria, beginning just off the Calle Reyes Catolicos, and extending back as far as the Cathedral. It is an area rich with history and local culture, still packed with interesting, exotic things to buy.

Gothic & Renaissance

Classic Gothic architecture, overlapping with the mudéjar style, spread through Andalucía from the 14th century with the Reconquest. As the Christians recovered the towns and cities there was a big movement to build churches. The design is characterised by vertical lines, lofty pointed arches and high ceilings.

If well-priced, environmentally-friendly produce, that supports local businesses and farmers, is your thing, then this is the ideal market. The market opens on the first Saturday of the month in the car park in Elveria Las Chapas on the mountain side of the A-7 coast road.
