Jerez del Marquesado

History of Pegalajar

History

The oldest evidenced occupation of the municipal area dates back to somewhere between 2000 and 2500 BC, and can be traced in the Cueva de Aro. Further prehistoric references can be found on the hill of the Torre de la Cabeza, where remains from the Copper, Bronze, Iberian, Roman and Medieval periods have been unearthed. The first written reference to a population in Pegalajar is found in the tenth-century work of oriental geographer Al Muqadasi.

Centre of Contemporary Andalucian Art

The Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo is housed in the magnificent 15th-century Monasterio Santa Maria de las Cuevas. Known as La Cartuja, this is located in the district of the same name, north of Triana and across the river from the city centre – look for the iconic, cone-shaped towers.

Olivia Valere

This night club disco which is located on the Istan road near the Marbella Mosque above the Golden Mile. Housed in a purpose built Moorish structure with a vast dance floor, several bars and an outdoor terrace for al fresco cocktails. Seriously swanky venue which always delivers a euphoric punch. Excellent for celebrity spotting and a club for the seriously cool.

Purchena

Purchena is known by many as the “Pearl of the Almanzora” for its fascinating cultural tourism. It has around 1,600 inhabitants. Copper Age settlements known as Churuletes and various Roman villas have been found in the Onegas area. Purchena was the capital of the Almanzora River during the Al-Andalus period and was founded, according to the chronicles, by the last Emir of Córdoba, Abdalah.

Málaga Feria poster 2024

The poster for Malaga Fair 2024 is called Mi playa en Feria (My beach at the fair) and was designed by Eloisa Peñas Cárdenas from Jaén, who lives in Malaga. There were five finalists and the jury of experts chose Eloisa's creation. There were 105 entries from all over Spain. The finalists were chosen by a public vote on the Internet.

Montilla

Montilla is world-famous for its wine and endless fields of grape-vines punctuate a landscape of gentle rolling hills. It is best known for its dry white wine which is made using the same solera method as sherry. The very sweet Pedro Ximenez grapes are used so consequently, it does not need fortifying.

History of Terque

The first cultural settlement of Terque is likely to have been prehistoric, evidenced by the millenary cave town found by the occupants of the Millares, heirs of the Neolithic culture. However, Terque was formerly known as Marchena.
