Castillo Fortaleza Aracena

The castle was built in the middle of the thirteenth century and remained in use until the early sixteenth century, when it lost its military functionality. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries it was used again, as headquarters for troops during the conflict of the Portuguese Restoration and the French occupation in the War of the Independence.

Mairena del Aljarafe

Mairena del Aljarafe derives from the Arabic translation of "Maharana" meaning, "shepherds herd", confirming its rich agricultural origins, unlike the thriving sub-urban town it has become today. It has about 45, 000 inhabitants.

Mairena del Aljarafe was founded by the Moors, although they were not the first to populate this area, as Romans also had settlements in this region due to the fertility of the land for cultivating olive groves and other agricultural exploitations.

Museo del Santo Sepulcro

This religious museum is housed in the Casa de Hermandad (House of Brotherhood) and boasts impressive exhibitions of the processional thrones and canopies. There are also two further exhibition rooms that display objects and robes of the Brotherhood, and other processional accessories.

Los Escullos

If Bond movies, quirky bars, fossils and remote Mediterranean beaches appeal to you, take a trip to Los Escullos. Los Escullos is a small cluster of houses overlooking the jagged Almeria coastline, a few km north of San Jose. Sitting under the extinct volcano Cerro del Fraile (at 493m, El Fraile peak is the highest of the Sierra del Cabo de Gata), it has a certain charm.

Castillo del Nicio

Situated on a hilltop called Cerro del Castor, between the deep valleys of Rios Padrón & Castor, are extensive ruins dating mainly from the late Moorish and Christian periods. They have been called the least visited, least studied and least well known of the major archaeological sites in the province of Málaga.

Landscapes - Salt Marshes

Salt marshes are a natural source of sea salt. The marshes flood on a high tide and then a series of earth bund walls and sluice gates regulate the level of the seawater. As the water evaporates under the hot sun, the salt is left behind; it is then collected and stored, and the process is repeated. The main locations for this are Cabo del Gata (whose sea salt is highly prized in cooking) and the Marismas de Odiel in Huelva.

Casa de Puga

Casa de Puga is a tapas institution in Almeria. The bar/restaurant on Calle Jovellanos (no 7), which opened in 1870, is deeply traditional in both decor and cuisine. Originally the building was used for parking carriages downstairs, and as an inn upstairs. From 1900 it was owned by Don Juan Puga Antequera, who founded the current restaurant with his wife Maria Lopez Romero.

History

The towns of Restábal, Melegís and Saleres did not come together as El Valle until 10 October 1972, when they were united under the same council, which adopted the name El Valle and established its headquarters in Restábal.

Puente de Hierro de Eiffel

The bridge was built in 1893 as part of the Linares-Baeza-Almería Line, and next to the station to connect Almería with the rest of Spain. It was designed in the studios of the engineer Eiffel, although some sources cite that it was the direct work of Eiffel rather than his pupils. The latest advances in wrought iron were used in its production, together with classic constructions such as quarry stone, reflected in its ten pilasters.

Yellow Bee Orchid – Ophrys lutea

This beautifully striking little orchid, will generally be found growing to around 10-20cm tall, occasionally taller. The main leaves are oblong and form a basal rosette of up to six leaves (often browning by flowering time), with other leaves alternately sheathing the flowering stem. These are narrower and more pointed then the basal leaves.
