Balneario de Marmolejo

The Marmolejo public spa building dates from the first half of the twentieth century, and is housed in an eclectically styled set of buildings on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. Among its beautiful gardens, a building from the end of the nineteenth century particularly stands out, known as Casa del Médico.

Centro de Interpretación

The Interpretation Centre offers a journey through the history of the southeast of the peninsula, focusing on the Iberian and Roman cultures of Almeria and their main exponent in the Bajo Andarax: the archaeological site of “El Chuche”.

Yacimiento Arqueológico “El Chuche”

The archaeological area of “El Chuche” includes the hill of El Paredón, the hill of Las Agüicas and an intermediate sector between them. In the latter, excavations were carried out at the end of the 1970s, in which numerous walls of dwelling structures and a rich and varied repertoire of materials, mainly ceramic, appeared, among them Iberian and Mediterranean imports.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Virgen de la Cabeza

The church is situated within the old mosque of Benahadux, which after its consecration in 1505 was erected under the invocation of the Virgen de la Cabeza and her patron, San José. In 1770, the Town Hall sent a letter to the Bishop of Almeria indicating the lamentable state of the old church and the need to build a new religious building.

Toro de Osborne

The Osborne Bull advertising structure for the Spanish wine and food producer is one of twenty copies, which were built and erected between 1957 and the late 1970s. In general, they respond to an evolved layout based on an original drawing by designer Manuel Prieto Benítez (1912-1991), with changes that seek to adapt them to the construction system and process.

Molino y Balsa de San Miguel

Also known as Molino del Marqués de Almansa, this is a mill with two stones and two waterfalls that grind with the abundant flow provided by the Benahadux spring. Its remains include large pieces of limestone with which the cube was assembled, large blocks of stone.

Iglesia de San José

Previously the grain store of the Marquis, the building was later converted into a temple around 1888. At present it has been converted into a municipal exhibition hall and a multipurpose space. The church responds to the typical scheme of the Order of Carmelites.

Torre del Charche

Also known as, Torre Chacón, the medieval Islamic tower was built as a watchtower, perfectly situated high on a hill. Located 2km south of Vélez Rubio.

Palacio de las Catequistas

Formerly the home of the Administrador del Marqués, the building dates back to the eighteenth century and was refurbished as a church at the end of the nineteenth century.

Hospital Real

The civil building houses the Velezano Miguel Guirao Regional Museum and the Vélez Rubio Municipal Tourism Office. The building was built in 1765 and from the early years of the nineteenth century it was the subject of a hectic and eventful life, as it served successively as a center of occupation for French troops and a hospital for the poor in 1822.

Convento de María Inmaculada

An outstanding seventeenth century construction for the headquarters of a Community of Franciscans. It was the headquarters of the French in the War of Independence. After the monks were cloistered in 1835.

Fundacion de Valentin de Madriaga y Oya

Located in the former US Pavilion from the Expo 29, next to Maria Luisa Park, this cultural foundation offers a wide range of exhibitions, activities and courses, from photographic shows featuring the cream of Andalucian and international talent, to film production courses for children.

Ayuntamiento

The Town Hall was built in 1732 and restored between 1991 and 1993, incorporating then Baroque elements on the façade and some later ones associated with modernist reforms carried out in 1909, with few original features. Located in Plaza de la Encarnación.

Castillo El Castellón

There are certain confusions whether this castle was linked to Vélez Blanco or Rubio, since the Arab authors cite only, Vélez. In the tenth century it was certainly inhabited and there are descriptions of it the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.

Ermita de San Antonio de Padua

The Chapel of San Antonio is a unique construction. According to local legend, an agreement was reached with the neighboring municipality of Lucainena de las Torres to take the icon of the saint from the chapel of origin to Lucainena.

Iglesia de Santa María

The construction of the neo-Romanesque church was commissioned by the Count of Aguilar. The bell tower did not appear in the original design due to limited budget, and was added centuries later when the Church was completely renovated.

Ermita de la Virgen de la Cabeza

The chapel offers the best viewpoint in the region, and has become a key destination for pilgrims and hikers alike. Located on the summit of Monteagud, a reference point throughout the region for geographical and religious orientation. Located north of Uleila del Campo, off the A-1100.

Yacimiento Arqueológico Cueva de la Mora

The main archeological site is from the Neolithic era, although the valley was inhabited until the beginning of the twentieth century. It has an easy defense with a single entrance that opens to the valley with a natural spring a few meters away.

Iglesia Parroquia de Santa María

The Parish Church dates from the sixteenth century. Its strong tower stands out, built in the middle of the sixteenth century to defend the Christians from the attacks of the Moors. In 1965, the Church was the film set for the movie ‘Death Had a Price’, in which some local women appeared as extras. Located in Plaza de España.

Mirador de la Umbría

The viewpoint is situated in the highest part of the town; from it, you can see a landscape of great beauty, especially when the almond trees are in bloom.
