Centro de Interpretación del Trabajo Tradicional

The Interpretation Center of Traditional Work is dedicated to preserving and disseminating information about the most typical local trades. Most of the exhibition centres around works derived from the Mediterranean triad (cereal, vine and olive tree), but almond agriculture also features.

Iglesia de Santa María

The church was burned during the Moorish revolution in 1570 and its reconstruction began on January 1, 1600, but was not completed until 1734. It is believed to be in the late Gothic style with a Mudejar coffered ceiling.

Iglesia de San Antonio

This church was erected in 1900 in a popular historicist style dating from the late nineteenth century. It was built on a the site of a previous hermitage from the early 700s. Its size and white exterior are perfectly integrated into the architecture of El Contador.

Chirivel

Chirivel is the fourth town of the comarca of Los Vélez in the north of the Almeria province, south of the Sierra de María. It is worth a visit in April to see the almond trees blossoming. It has about 1470 inhabitants. The town has several outlying hamlets including El Contador, Aspilla, El Cantal and Rambla del Jali.

Iglesia Parroquial de San Isidoro

The church was built at the end of the nineteenth century. An earlier plan by Ortiz de Villajos in 1865 was never executed. It has a structure of three naves and tower on the north side matching its bell tower on the other. Inside, there is a painting attributed to Luis Tristan, who was a student of El Greco.

Ermita de Febeire

The simple chapel was painted white and has only one door. It is currently in a state of abandonment. Located north of the town.

Museo del Esparto

The first museum dedicated to esparto grass, the weaving material that has been used since prehistoric times in the creation of containers, footwear, rope, etc. Located in El Contador.

Horno Árabe

A bread-baking oven is traditionally known as a ‘tahona’ in Spanish. The tahona in Chirivel is one of the oldest buildings in the town, with its construction predating that of the church. These ovens were always communal, and locals would bring their bread dough to be baked at a price.

Santuario de la Virgen de la Cabeza

The Sanctuary was built at the end of the sixteenth century at the foot of the Sierra de María in honor of the Virgen de la Cabez who, according to tradition, appeared to shepherds in this exact spot. Since 1813, on the last Sunday in April, festivals have been held in honor of this Virgin, and her icon remains in the town throughout May.

Casa del Minero

The miner’s house is a modernist art deco house built in 1906 by a wealthy mine owner from Cartagena. The facade has several balconies and decorative elements, and its interior splendor is concentrated on the walls, ceilings, doors and wrought iron staircase. Located in Plaza del Pueblo.

Ermita de la Soledad

The chapel was built in the Las Cruces neighborhood in the second half of the sixteenth century to venerate the Virgen de la Soledad. The adjacent monument of the cross was built later to celebrate the Viacrucis.

Convento

The Convent was built in 1920 and was inhabited successively by nuns of the Claridad (Corneta) and Clausura (Madres Mercedarias). It was abandoned in the early 1960s. In 1988, it was bought and restored by the Town Hall, and today it is used for socio-cultural purposes. Located on Calle Hornos.

Caz y Cubo del Molino de Araoz

This is the largest canal and deposit in the province of Almeria. It is 13m high from the floor of the mill and 9.5m from its base on the mountain to the top. The supporting wall of the canal is 95cm thick, and its height decreases as it approaches the water’s entrance.

Iglesia de la Virgen del Rosario

The church is the result of a long construction process that began in 1673 and ended in 1763. It started as a Baroque building and ended up as one of the greatest exponents of Almeria’s Neoclassicism. It is therefore an atypical building.

Castillo El Castillejo

Also known as Castillo de Ciscarejo, the castle is now an important archaeological site evidencing different phases of the town’s historical occupation. It is important to know the organization of the Andarax Valley and more so considering its proximity to the chalcolithic deposit of Los Millares.

Necrópolis Megalítica

This archaeological site features one of the largest and most interesting funerary complexes in the southeast of the peninsula. Different types of burials are represented, with the majority being megalithic, characterized by having a central chamber with a polygonal plan, built with large stones arranged vertically, and a flat roof made from large stone slabs.

Ermita de las Ánimas

The chapel is a temple where older people often go to pray, make promises and offer donations. Located at the end of the urban area of Nacimiento, in the Barranco del Moro.

Iglesia de la Virgen de la Salud

In the centre of the village is the parish church. It was built in the eighteenth century, in the Neoclassical style, and features a barrel vault and high bell tower. Located on Calle Porche in Plaza de la Juventud.

Iglesia de San Miguel

It is believed that construction of this church began around the eighteenth century, and it is unknown when the works were completed. The temple has a cross plan, with three vaults and two doors, the main one, and another on the side called Puerta de los Perdones. After the Spanish Civil War it underwent reformation as it had been partially destroyed. Located in Plaza Dr. Jose Muriana Galindo.

Iglesia de la Inmaculada

Eighteenth-century parish church in the Neoclassical style. It is unusual in that the roof is covered with thin slate rather than terracotta roof tiles. Its interior is very sober and the arches that support the vault stand out.
