Nigüelas

Nigüelas is a charming village and the highest municipality in the Lecrín Valley. The 3,000-metre-high Pico del Caballo mountain impresses visitors with its grandeur. Capped with snow in winter, it offers views down to the sea on a summer's day. The village has a population of around 1,200.

HISTORY

The history of Nigüelas dates back to prehistoric times. The first signs of human settlement in the area date back to the Neolithic era, when the inhabitants lived in small communities and relied on agriculture and livestock farming for survival. Various archaeological finds, such as stone tools and pottery fragments, attest to the presence of these early settlers. GASTRONOMY

Typical dishes to try in Nigüelas are puchero de hinojos (fennel stew), remojón de naranja (orange and cod salad), migas (fried breadcrumbs with pork), ajoblanco (garlic and almond soup), escabeche de pescado frito (fish escabeche), pipirrana (cucumber, pepper, tomato salad) and puchero de pitos (bean and pork stew).
