Aldeire

ALDEIRE

Aldeire  is situated on the northern edge of the Sierra Nevada National Park, Aldeire is a favourite ideal destination for nature and outdoor sports lovers, particularly those who enjoy hiking. It has a population of around 800.

LOCATION

Aldeire is located at about 88 kilometres from Granada. To get to Aldeire from Granada, we take the A-44 road towards Jaen and we turn off on exit 118 towards Murcia, which will take us to the A-92 motorway. We take the exit 312 on to A-337. When we get to La Calahorra, we continue down GR-SE-3, which joins the GR-5201, which, in turn will take us to our destination.

HISTORY

There are numerous remains that confirm this area has been populated since prehistoric times. The discovery of copper deposits at almost ground level led to the settlement of the Argar culture in the area. More>

THINGS TO SEE

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación 
The current configuration of the church is the result of successive renovations. The first church was built in the mid-sixteenth century, but was burned by the Moors during the 1568 rebellion.More>

Baños Árabes 
A new project is underway to showcase the value of the Arab baths built during the Nasrid period. According to historical documents, they were renovated in the sixteenth century and were in operation until 1566.More>

This project aims to highlight the night sky as a driving force for the revitalization and economic development of Aldeire’s rural environment.More>

THINGS TO SEE OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE

Fortaleza de Aldeire 
At the Forteleza de Aldeire you can see the remains of buildings with masonry walls over a metre thick. Some of these houses have recently been renovated. Although they still have thick walls on their façades; others have been demolished. According to local residents, very thick masonry walls were discovered during the demolition, which they called 'Moorish work'. Located southeast of the town.

HANDICRAFTS

The handicrafts of the village are mainly based on esparto grass creations for personal use and they do not normally sell their products.

GASTRONOMY

Chestnuts, almonds and homemade jams made with local fruit are the main delicacies of Aldeire. If you happen to be in the village for lunch, try the lomo con castañas (pork with chestnuts), potaje de Semana Santa (chickpea stew), potaje de habillas blancas (white bean stew), sopa de picadillo (chicken broth with egg and jamón), conejo al ajillo (garlic rabbit), sopa de mariscos (seafood stew) and bacalao a la sidra (cider cod). Sweet treats include roscos de huevo (doughnuts), torrijas (eggy bread), buñuelos (dumplings) and pastel de café (coffee cake).
