Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

This church, which was built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, stands on the site of an old mosque. It consists of three naves, each of which is separated by four arches. The wooden roof is one of the few original features still preserved in the church. The two doors and the main base of the roof are both original features dating back to that time. The church also has a clock whose machinery dates back to 1936, which is still wound up manually. The bell tower contains four bells of different sizes. The largest bell is named “María Pantaleona” in memory of an old bell that was melted down during the Spanish Civil War to make munitions. It is located in Plaza Obispo Peinado.
