Eating out in Seville

Seville has an amazing restaurant scene – from traditional tapas to innovative dishes. Most offer at least a few vegetarian options – look out for tortilla de patatas (potato omelette) and (vegan) espinacas con garbazones (spinach with chickpeas).

High-end gastronomic dining

You definitely need to book tables at these restaurants. Always check out the tasting menus, which often provide the most interesting dining experience with fresh, experimental approaches to age-old classics. Ask about wine pairings.

Eneko Basque
Under the auspices of Michelin-starred Basque chef Eneko Atxa, this exceptional restaurant at the Radisson hotel in Plaza Magdalena has sexy curved velvet booths, where you can enjoy excellent tasting menus and great service.

El Limón
A pretty patio in Don Ramón hotel offers North African-Mediterranean dishes from the Moroccan chef; try the good value tasting menu. Great wine list, focussing on local wines.

Cañabota
Michelin-starred fish restaurant offering two tasting menus – in the longer one, the chef designs a menu for you; in the other, you choose three fish dishes. You can also go à la carte.

Maria Luisa
A well-kept secret: small, discreet dining room in the chic Mercer Hotel in the Arenal district. A showcase for quality Spanish products including Andalucian prawns and ham from Huelva, Retinto beef and new takes such as bao buns.

Chicarreros
Maximalist décor (patterned wallpaper, fringed pendant lights), attentive service and excellent wine list at this centrally-located restaurant just off Plaza San Francisco.

Tribeca
Outside the historic centre, in San Bernardo district, this has the white linen tablecloths and hushed ambience of serious gastronomy. Beautifully presented dishes, particularly strong on fish.

Contemporary restaurants

You should make a reservation to eat at these places.

Azotea – the first gastrobar in Seville more than 15 years ago, this is still as popular as ever. Also has a rice restaurant; ask for the daily specials.

Desataco – innovative dishes in a minimalist space near the Alameda.

Eterno – expertly crafted dishes in a stylish dining room and pleasant outdoor terrace, shaded by orange trees, in Santa Cruz.

De la O – off the beaten path place by the river in Triana, close to the Puente del Cachorro, serving dishes focussed on locally-sourced ingredients.

Puratasca – much-loved Triana restaurant known for its low-key interior but superb fusion tapas.

Eslava – a Seville institution on the plaza of locally-revered Jesús del Gran Poder church. Try the Becquer’s cigar – a filo pastry roll with squid, squid ink, seaweed and bechamel.

El Disparate – excellent restaurant with an imaginative menu, in the heart of the bohemian Alameda district. Extensive wine list.

Señor Cangrejo – small place with futuristic décor offering avant garde versions of Mediterranean dishes on a select menu. Highly recommended sommelier, who is well versed in regional wines.

Barra Baja – close to Plaza del Duque, this intimate restaurant, where you can sit at the bar and watch the chefs, Rafa and Patri at work (they’re a couple), is a locals’ favourite.
