Arcos de la Frontera - Town walk

From Tapas to Terraces: Discovering Arcos de la Frontera

Perched dramatically on a sandstone ridge, Arcos de la Frontera is one of Andalusia’s most striking white towns, where history, tradition, and breathtaking views blend seamlessly. Wandering through its maze of narrow cobbled streets reveals a wealth of local charm—from enjoying a leisurely meal in one of its welcoming tapas bars or restaurants, to sampling delicate pastries made by cloistered nuns. Shoppers will delight in finding excellent local olive oil, while the journey naturally culminates in the magnificent panorama from the Plaza del Cabildo, where the town seems to float above the rolling countryside below. For those with more time, a visit—or better still, an overnight stay—at the Parador is well worth it, not only for the spectacular views from its terraces but also for its superb kitchen, where the salmorejo is among the most delicious in Andalusia.

Parking

Park the car on the highest floor of the underground car park under the Paseo de Andalucía at the entrance to the town. There is also a lower entrance to the car park on the Avenida Duque de Arcos which follows the river at the bottom of the escarpment.

Our suggested walk

Exit the car park near the Plaza de España where there are a number of cafés (Café Olé, Café Faro) should you need refreshment before the uphill walk. There are two streets you can walk up. Take Calle Corredera (to the left) if you prefer the hustle and bustle of a shopping street. Take Paseo de los Boliches if you prefer the exceptional views of the countryside. Keep heading towards the prominent square tower of the Iglesia de Santa María.

Both routes lead to the Plaza del Cabildo via very narrow streets and arches, which is why we recommend you park the car below. On the way, you will pass the Hospital de San Juan de Dios.

In the Plaza del Cabildo you will find the Mirador de la Peña Nueva, the Town Hall, the Tourist Office, the Parador Hotel, the Corredor Restaurant and Terrace Bar and the Iglesia de Santa Maria.

Leave the Plaza by the street to the left of the Parador Hotel and stroll towards the Iglesia de San Pedro, passing on the way the Convent of the Mecedarian Nuns, the small Municipal Market, the Andalusi Gardens and the Mayorazgo Palace.
