Puente Hundido

Puente Hundido

In ancient times, the bridge was a vitally important route, connecting Algarinejo with the Priego– Iznájar and Montefrío–Loja cattle routes. This road was strengthened due to its importance as a border crossing during the Nasrid period, so its origins are often dated to possibly the fourteenth century.

The bridge has three piers or abutments over the Turca River, one of which is located about 70m from its original location. According to Madoz, the bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1837. From this moment on, it gradually fell into disrepair until it collapsed again in the 1960s.
