Torre o Fortín de Pesquera

Torre o Fortín de Pesquera

Pesquera Castle, also known as Torre de Pesquera, is a defensive complex located on a rocky outcrop on the right bank of the Pesquera River, a tributary of the Genil River. It is reached via the road that connects the village of Fuentes de Cesna with the municipality of Zagra.

Like Turrush Castle, Pesquera Castle is therefore located in a valley. These are the only fortresses in the province not located on high, inaccessible promontories.

It formed part of a series of towers, defending the Pesquera River valley and the rural population who lived off the cultivation of the surrounding fertile plains. Its strategic importance increased during the Nasrid reign, when the lands of Algarinejo became the border with the Christian Kingdom.
