Torre del Fuerte in Alhendín

Torre del Fuerte in Alhendín

The Torre del Fuerte is an Andalusian fortress that controlled part of the Vega de Granada. Over time, it became one of the most important bastions during the Nasrid period and was cited by the chronicler Ibn Said as one of the most important farmsteads based on its population. During the Christian reconquest of the Vega de Granada, it held special strategic importance, serving as the base for the encampment of King Fernando El Católico (Fernando II of Aragon and V of Castile) in 1483. It was later besieged by Mohamed Abu-Abdil (Boabdil) in 1490 and was conquered and razed to the ground. After the capture of Granada in 1500, King Fernando gathered an army around this tower to combat the resistance in the Alpujarras.

Over time, this tower has been used for various purposes, although its greatest architectural transformation occurred when it was acquired by the Marquis of Alhendín in the eighteenth century, to adapt it for his personal use. At the end of the twentieth century, it was acquired by the Fundación Benéfica Asilo y Escuelas de la Purísima Concepción (Asylum and Schools of the Immaculate Conception). It was declared a Site of Cultural Interest, with the legal status of a Monument, and is registered as such in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on 29 June 1985.
