Cúllar - Tarifa

TARIFA

Tarifa is a small farming hamlet in the municipal district of Cúllar in the comarca of Baza. It sits on the Plateau of Chirivel, in the ‘High Plains’ (Altiplano) of Granada. It is located 500m south of the A-92N motorway (junction km 76 from Guadix, or km 372 from Seville). It has a tiny population of about 15. It should not be confused with the busy surfing town of Tarifa in the Cadiz province.

HISTORY

The early history of the area stems from the location being near an important Roman road. In the middle ages, this area south of the Sierra de María and Sierra de Marmon was forested and known as the

Campo de Chirivel

(Chirivel Plateau). During the thirteenth century, the region was on the eastern border of the Nasrid Emirate of Granada alongside the Christian Kingdom of Murcia. It was only lightly farmed and, as a potentially dangerous frontier location, the area was gradually depopulated. Tarifa grew around the spring at its centre and perhaps, as with so many nearby villages, a venta (roadside inn) as the village is on the original line of the main road. More>

Things to see in the village

There is not much to see in Tarifa as the village is very small.

Natural Park of the Sierra Maria-Los Vélez.
The Natural Park of the Sierra Maria-Los Vélez is to the north of the village. A host of wild animals and birds are attracted to the park as a habitat because of the abundance of vegetation. More>

Spring
There is a natural spring in the village. The water comes from the overflow of an old well, which was piped in 1930 to this animal-watering trough.

Restaurants
There are no bars in the village, however, on the north side of the A-92N motorway junction, there is a modern café, bar and restaurant called La Zanaca, opened in 2013.
