Like the nearby Desierto de Tabernas Natural Area, this is a dramatically eroded lunar landscape of semi-arid desert covering 2,375ha, designated a protected area in 1989. It is also Spain's most important karst landscape composed of gypsum (yeso), and one of the best examples of its kind in the world.
These magnificent caves near the town of Sorbas are located in the protected natural area of Karst in Yesos de Sorbas. Here you have the unique opportunity to view these caves in their natural state, unlit and with no man-made corridors.
Sorbas, also known as Cuenca la Chica, is an extremely impressive village. It is located on a small plateau over the Río Aguas, and its white houses are almost suspended over the ravine. It has around 2300 inhabitants. Several prehistoric settlements dating from the Neolithic and Metal Ages have been found in Sorbas. Some found in the town centre at the beginning of the twentieth century have been dated as far back as the Bronze Age.
