Teatro Cervantes

This historic theatre was built between 1886 and 1921, with a long delay due to financing problems. The project was started by the local bourgeouisie which organisedmany tertulias (informal discussion groups), one of whom first adopted the indalo man as its symbol, now ubiquitous as the province's logo.

Old Railway Station

The land for the station was acquired in 1880 and the work on the old station began by the Compañía de los Caminos de Hierro del Sur de España in 1890 and was completed in 1893 although the inauguration ceremony did not happen until the 23 of July 1895 with the line Guadix to Almería.

Casa de Puga

Casa de Puga is a tapas institution in Almeria. The bar/restaurant on Calle Jovellanos (no 7), which opened in 1870, is deeply traditional in both decor and cuisine. Originally the building was used for parking carriages downstairs, and as an inn upstairs. From 1900 it was owned by Don Juan Puga Antequera, who founded the current restaurant with his wife Maria Lopez Romero.

The Iglesia de Santiago Apostol

The Iglesia de Santiago Apostol is one of the oldest in Almeria city, and was founded by the Reyes Catolicos (Catholic Kings) in 1494, just five years after they recaptured the city from the Moors. It was located in an area which had a largely morisco population (Moors who converted to Christianity after the Reconquest).

El Cable Ingles

An extraordinary piece of industrial heritage, this railway pier was the loading bay for the mines in Alquife (Granada), which produced iron ore, copper and silver. Its continuing survival despite over 100 years­­­­' constant exposure to the corroding effects of saltwater, is testament to the quality of construction. As well as El Cable Ingles, the pier is also known as El Alquife.

Museo de Arte de Almeria

The second most important art museum in Almeria. In this museum of contemporary art, up to 4 different artistic disciplines are exhibited and works from 1980 to the present are shown, which makes it a reference space within the world of modern art. It is distributed in four exhibition halls.

Centro de Interpretación Patrimonial de Almería

This modern, interactive museum explains the history of Almeria city, spread over three floors, and features a large-scale relief model of the city and a five-minute high-definition film, shot mainly by drone, of Almeria’s history and main sights. The model and film offer an excellent introduction to the city for visitors

Casa del Poeta

osé Ángel Valente Docasar was a Spanish poet, essayist and translator of Galician origin who lived a large part of his life in the city of Almeria. He won numerous awards for his extensive work, such as the National Poetry Prize in 1993 and the Reina Sofía Prize for Ibero-American Poetry in 1998.

Real Monasterio de la Encarnacion

This convent is located on one side of Plaza Vieja, opposite the CIP and tourist office. Officially called Real Monasterio de la Encarnacion, it is known locally as Las Claras. The church dates from the 18th century, with a cross-shaped floor pattern, and a cupola over the transept decorated with plasterwork and coats of arms.

Museo de Arte Doña Pakyta

This beautiful gallery is in the restored house of Doña Francisca Torres Diaz (1911-2014, known as Doña Pakyta), an Almerian businesswoman and environmentalist thanks to whom the eastern Almeria coast has some of Andalusia’s most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. The museum opened in spring 2015, the 1920s Casa Vasca (Basque-style House) is a cultural centre.

Museo de Almeria

Also known as Almería Museo Arqueológico, the museum is housed in an award-winning contemporary building, displaying the considerable archaeological wealth of the province, from prehistoric remains discovered by the Siret Brothers at Los Millares, to Roman statues. It first opened as two rooms in the Escuela de Artes y Oficios in 1934.

Plaza de la Constitution

Plaza de la Constitution is also called Plaza Vieja, this square in the centre of the old town is located close to the cathedral and the Alcazaba. The square, which is narrow at one end, is enclosed by three-storey buildings - on one side is the Town Hall, an ornate Renaissance building with emblematic clock.

Casa del Cine

Also known as Cortijo Romero or Casa de Santa Isabel, this house belonged to the Balmes family and was later acquired by the Almeria Town Hall to restore it and convert it into a museum due to its relationship with the world of cinema. This house was very famous during the 60s and 70s, when Almeria was known as European Hollywood.

Almeria has an abundance of restaurants, tapas bars and cafés offering delicious food and snacks at reasonable prices. Like many places in Andalucia, a lot of tapas bars in Almería serve a small tapas dish with every round of drinks or drink ordered. Restaurant quality in the city can vary.

Almeria Art Galleries

Exhibitions and workshops are organised on a regular basis at the Centro Andaluz de la Fotografía (CAF). Opened in 1992, it focuses on all aspects of photography at a local and international level. Works by Spanish artists, from Zurbarán to Goya, Picasso and Antonio López, are on display in the permanent exhibition at the Galería de Arte Trino Tortosa, where temporary exhibitions also take place.
