Almeria Bus services

The bus station is located within the same building as the train station, in the Estación Intermodal. ( Intermodal station; meaning bus and train combined station). the building opened in 2005 as the first of its type in Spain. It is open from 05.00 to 24.00 hrs. Here is a plan of the station. You are able to take buses from here around the city.

Almeria Airport

There are regular national flights to Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Sevilla, Melilla. There are also regular International flights to London Gatwick, Stanstead, Munich, and Dusseldorf. See the table below. Charter companies also fly to Almería, making it the second most important airport in terms of foreign tourist arrivals in Andalucia.

Overlooked by the Alcazaba, this is Almeria's hottest hotel. The square where it is located was formerly called Plaza Vieja, the hence hotel's name. The 10 minimalist rooms have oak parquet floors, huge flat screen TVs, high-tech bathrooms with rainshowers (not everyone will like the loo’s glass walls) and oversized retro photos covering entire walls.

History

The city of Almeria was founded in 955 by the Arabs, but there are sites that trace their origins to prehistoric times. The hill where the Alcazaba is currently was the subject of the earliest occupation in prehistoric times, likely to be during the Bronze Age.

Almeria City - Fascinating Fact 2

Like Rio Tinto, in Huelva province, Almeria became a focus for French and British mining companies in the 19th century, reviving the city's flagging fortunes, with the Alquife mines in the interior producing iron, lead and gold. A new railway line (Almeria-Linares) and port were constructed, the most notable remains of this period of industrial prosperity being the Cable Ingles, a huge iron railway pier used to transport the mineral ores to the waiting ships which dates from 1902.

Almería as one of the eight provincial capitals of Andalucia houses various museums. True historians will appreciate the Almeria Museum which contains numerous objects discovered by the well-known Belgian mining engineer, Louis Siret. Almeria City - Five Fascinating Facts

Almeria was, until recently, the last well-known of Andalucia's provincial capitals. These days, however, thanks to the growing popularity of the province's beaches, especially nearby Cabo de Gata and its natural park, more visitors are getting to know Andalucia's fastest-growing major city. It remains, for now at least, largely uncommercialised.

Muralla de Jairan

Built in the 11th century by Jairan (or Jayran), the first ruler of the Almeria taifa (1012-1028), the wall descends the valley on the north side of the Alcazaba and climbs the Cerro de San Cristobal on the far side. The walls have three square towers dating from the Islamic era, plus four circular ones from the Christian period.

Cathedral de la Encarnacion, Almeria

This fortified behemoth of a basilica was designed in the 16th century with a dual role: as a place of worship, but also to protect the citizens when pirates attacked the city of Almeria after the Reconquest. Built in 1524, after an earthquake destroyed the previous structure, the cathedral is constructed, like so many churches in Spain, on the site of a mosque.

Almeria City - Fascinating Fact 3

It's not well known that John Lennon wrote Strawberry Fields Forever in Almeria. He lived in the city in autumn 1966, filming the part of Private Gripweed in Richard Lester's black comedy How I Won the War in the nearby desert at Tabernas. Lennon first stayed in an apartment near El Zapillo, one of the city`s beaches, then he moved to the more spacious 19th-century mansion, Santa Isabel, on Camino de Romero (known locally as Cortijo Romero), with his then-wife Cynthia.
