An important influence of the Carnaval dates back to the 16th century, when traders brought back stories of the decadent celebrations in the Italian port cities of Venice and Genoa. The tales of extravagant costumes and parties, music and dancing, inspired Cadiz's, which wanted to compete with its Mediterranean neighbours. It won - Cadiz is now the second-largest after Rio. The costumes are less showy that its Brazilian counterpart's, with emphasis on wit and cleverness rather than size and impressiveness.
