Andrew Johnston wins Spanish Open 2016 at Valdererama

Last year Andrew Johnston finished 113rd in his first Open de España appearance, at El Prat. Twelve months later, he proudly held the same tournament's imposing trophy aloft after overcoming the trials and wiles of Valderrama - and a top European Tour field. It was the 27-year-old Englishman's first victory on the main Tour (he had two wins on the Challenge Tour and topped that circuit's order of merit in 2014) in his 63rd start, and his triumph was sealed with a solid closing one-under 70 for a one-over total over four hugely demanding days at the renowned Sotogrande course.

Second-placed Dutchman Joost Luiten had a chance to force a play-off on the final hole but hit his approach into a greenside bunker and could only scramble a par to finish one behind the champion, who is affectionately referred to as "Beef". Tournament host Sergio García moved through the field with a best-of-the day 67 to finish third another stroke back, while 2008 Volvo Masters winner (also at Valderrama) Søren Kjeldsen was joint fourth with defending champion James Morrison. They were followed home by overnight leader Mike Lorenzo-Vera, Martin Kaymer and Alex Noren, with Craig Lee filling out the top-10.

Valderrama reinforces its credentials in third round of Spanish Open

Valderrama continues to reinforce its credentials as a brutally unforgiving test for Europe's finest. Only two players broke par in the third round - Alex Noren (three-under 68) and Joost Luiten (70) - while the new leader, France's Mike Lorenzo-Vera, is one-over after 54 holes. If the winning score on Sunday remains over-par, it will be the first time this has occurred on the European Tour since Justin Rose was victorious in the 2013 US Open. "I'm very excited," said Lorenzo-Vera, who is seeking his first European Tour title. "I'm going to have a big nap tonight because it takes so much energy to stay patient here."   Lorenzo-Vera leads the way More>

Wind-swept second round of the 2016 Open de España

It's not often a top international tour pro will come off a course after a battling over-par round well-satisfied with their day's effort. But this is Valderrama, one of the toughest courses in the world, and only two players managed to card under par (both 70s) in the wind-swept second round of the 2016 Open de España. Another four with even-par 71s included tournament host Sergio García (who said he had never seen the course provide such a challenge) and Pablo Larrazábal, the halfway leader on three-under - two better than second-placed Andrew Johnston and a further one stroke ahead of first round leader Alexander Levy, defending champion James Morrison and Alejandro Cañizares.    Pablo plans on track at Valderrama More>

Levy leads after first day in the Spanish Open at Valderrama

Valderrama rarely gives players much respite, and the first day of the 2016 Open de España predictably proved to be a formidable challenge for the European Tour field. Frenchman Alexander Levy was one of the few able to "defeat" Europe's number one course, carding a five-under 66 to end the day one ahead of defending champion James Morrison, Alejandro Cañizares, Andrew Johnston and Stuart Manley.    Levy leads the way at Valderrama More>

Valderrama launches major renovation plan to upgrade the golf course and practice areas

Club de Golf Valderrama, the venue for the 1997 Ryder Cup, two World Golf Championships and 16 editions of the Volvo Masters, is currently undertaking major investments. Valderrama has been consistently ranked among the best courses in the World since 1988. The fairways and greens have always received unanimous appraisal from players and experts. However, the Board of Directors has approved a major investment plan to upgrade the golf course and improve its position among the best manicured courses in the World.

Valderrama Masters 2011

SERGIO GARCIA Winner of the Andalucía Masters

"I'm out of words. Miguel, he fought so hard. and he had some good chances coming in. 17 for eagle and 18, for birdie. We hung in there tough. I wasn't feeling as good as in the last 13 days, but we hung in and managed to pull through. It's very, very special to win in Valderrama. I've had so much history here, and unfortunately it wasn't as good as this until now.

Valderrama Masters 2010

McDowell not winded at the Valderrama Masters In Andalucia

  • The Northern Irishman, Graeme McDowell took the trophy with a winning round of 74 strokes, 3 under par.
  • Soren Kjeldsen, Gareth Maybin, Damien McGrane all came in second (-1)

4th November 2010 - The final day at this year's Valderrama Masters in Andalucia saw a tough day had by all, struggling mainly due to the wind. The Valderrama Golf course is one of the great courses on the European Tour and is an essential part of the European Tour. Since its construction in 1974 the course in southern Spain has hosted European greats such as Colin Montgomerie, Nick Faldo, Berhard Langer and Padraig Harrigton who also won at the course this is when the competition was called the Volvo masters.

In 2010 this was changed to the Valderrama Masters and the trophy was taken by Graeme McDowell with a score of three under par in a low scoring competitive field.

In a year where the Northern Irishman won both the US open and was part of the winning team at the Ryder cup, he also added the competition in Andalucia to his list of titles for the year.

After his victory McDowell expressed that "[To] win at Valderrama is very special to me, I always want to win in the best courses in the world". This reflects not only his excitement in winning the event but also how a win at The Valderrama Masters goes hand in hand with a Major win.

With this win, the US Open champion climbs into the top 10 players in the world and pushes fellow European competitor, Kaymer out. After an all Irish battle at the top on the final day, once again the 17th hole became decisive, last years' winner Soren Kjeldson sneaked in to gain joint second alongside the 2 remaining Irishmen.

Unfortunately the Spanish competitors failed to reach contention for the title with Miguel Angel Jimenez the highest ranked in 7th place. But players had only good things to say about the competition and Jimenez summed up the day for the Spaniards by saying "It's a shame that we have not had a Spanish winner but we tried and that will continue."

Volvo Masters 2008

SOREN KJELSEN WINS THE 21ST AND FINAL VOLVO MASTERS

Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark won the twenty first and final Volvo Masters at eight under par. Runners up were Anthony Wall of England and Martin Kaymer of Germany both with six under par. Soren skilfully managed to maintain the lead he set in the first round. The exceptionally heavy rain weather had been a big issue in this event causing huge disruption to the middle rounds, however the fourth round and final enjoyed  Andalucian sunshine.

Soren explained the “birdies on the 11th and 12 were decisive because they calmed me down”. Soren also admitted that he had been on the lucky side of the draw as far as the worst of the weather was concerned.

Volvo Masters 2007

Justin Rose of England wins the 2007 Volvo Masters and the European Tour Order of Merit.

The man with a clear four shot overnight lead allowed it to be slowly eroded away to finish one under par along with Simon Dyson (England) and Soren Kjeldson (Denmark), an outsider who surprised everybody by scoring four birdies on the way out. The three leaders are had to endure a two hole play off. This is the fifth year in succession that a play off has been necessary to decide the winner at Valderrama, this time it was three not two players. All three scored a par on the 18th and Rose was the only one to birdie the 10th, securing his victory.

MEL PYATT, THE “FATHER” OF THE VOLVO MASTERS

The Volvo Masters, the Grand Finale of the European Tour season, will celebrate its twentieth anniversary from 1st to 4th November at Club de Golf Valderrama, in San Roque (Cádiz). Many have witnessed and have lived the event from its very first staging in 1988, but not many people know the story of how the tournament was born. Its “father” is the English golf professional Mel Pyatt, now President and Chief Executive Officer for Volvo Event Management, who, incidentally, will be retiring at the end of the year.more >

Volvo Masters 2006

Jeev Singh, wins the 2006 Volvo Masters.

The overnight leader finished two under par on the final day of the four day tornament. The softly spoken Jeev Singh's only previous serious title was The Volvo China Open earlier this year. He was ranked 44th in the European Tour Order of Merit, this win of 666 thousand Euro moved him up into 16th position. Singh, the first Indian golfer to qualify for The European Tour by winning his card in 1997 is the son of a former Olympic sprinter. The best advise from his father was, "you've got to stay in the present and you've got to breath well." Sing represented India in 1996 Alfred Dunhill Cup, beating Andrew Coltart as India pulled off a shock win over Scotland Asked if he is a good front runner after day three he said, "Not too bad, I would prefer coming from the back, we will see what happens tomorrow.

Volvo Masters 2005

McGinley wins the 2005 Volvo Masters.

Colin Montgomerie and Sergio Garcia, the joint overnight leaders started the day at 10 under par. Sergio continued last nights roll by putting a birdie on the first hole and taking the lead, but he lost this advantage with a bogey on the 2nd and the 5th. Montgomerie bogeyed the 3rd and birdied the 5th.

Volvo Masters Andalucia 2004

Ian Poulter wins the Volvo Masters Andalucia 2004.

Ian Poulter wins the Volvo Masters Andalucia 2004 against Sergion Garcia of Spain in a Playoff. Perfect weather conditions marked most of the final day of the Volvo Masters Andalucia. The beautiful blue sky in the morning has encouraged a good turnout of visitors from the Costa del Sol. There was plenty to keep the spectators on their toes. For the second year running they saw the local hero in a play off to try to be the first Spaniard to win the Volvo Masters Andalucia.

Volvo Masters Andalucia 2003

Fredrik Jacobson -Volvo Masters Andalucia 2003 champion.

Fredrik Jacobson was the Volvo Masters Andalucia 2003 champion and the first Swede to win three official events in the same season. The final day was a two horse race between Jacobson the Swede and local hero Carlos Rodiles from Malaga. Jacobson said afterwards, "A good battle with Carlos (Rodiles) this week, it has been quite unbelievable the way this story has been going a times, up and down. The Volvo Masters Andalucia 2003 was a remarkable four day event not just for the golf, but for the changeable November weather at Valderrama, Sotogrande."
