Algatocín is part of the famous Pueblos Blancos, or white villages that run through the Serranía de Ronda (Ronda Mountain Range) and dot the hills through Málaga and Cádiz provinces. This tiny village of less than 1.000 inhabitants, has a narrow, 20 square kilometre, municipal area that runs from east to west and strides the Guadiaro and Genal valleys.
Arriate is a jack-in-the-box; a surprise package in a plain wrapper. Enter it from any direction, and it appears to be a sleepy rural village waiting, with no sense of urgency, for its grass to grow and its paint to dry. Then, abracadabra! - a corner is turned and the visitor is suddenly thrown into the sophisticated high street of a chic and bustling small town.
Benalauría is a small village in the Ronda Mountains (Serranía de Ronda) in the Genal River Valley. The populations hovers around 500 and the natives are known not as “benalaurianos” – as one might expect – but as “jabatos”.
The village of Cuevas del Becerro, 733 metres above sea level and sitting quietly beside the Ronda to Campillos road like a retired highwayman dreaming of his fiery youth, is living proof that in the hills of Andalucía there is always more to the landscape than meets the eye.
Benadalid is a village that is working hard to develop its reputation for quality rural tourism. With a perfect location, this has not been difficult as the town is situated in the Genal River Valley and close to the Guadiaro Valley and surrounded by Cuco mountains and near the “Tajo de los Aviones” and “Tajo de la Cruz” gorges.
This hidden village can only be approached by car, along its own short but mountainous 3-kilometre road. To find the turn off, look for Gaucín on the map and the junction to the right is 5 kilometres to the north. The municipal district was probably much larger as the pueblo was once the site of an important village.
Located halfway between the Ronda-San Pedro road and village of Juzcar, Cartajima is a small, quiet hamlet. It is one of the highest communities in the province of Malaga, at 846m above sea level. Like other villages in the Alto Genal of the Serrania de Ronda, Cartajima is famous for its chestnut trees , which are harvested in October and November.
Spain is known world-wide as a country of many fiestas - festivals of religious fervour like Semana Santa (Easter Holy Week) and festivals of a more secular nature like winter carnivals. You can find celebrations for just about every taste if you travel far and wide enough in this country.
El Teatro Cervantes is situated right in the centre of the city, near Plaza de la Merced and easy walking distance to other historic monuments such as the Roman Theatre, the Cathedral and the Alcazaba.
Theatre Festivals. Sevilla, Málaga, Cadiz, Jerez and other cities offer theatre and opera festivals and programmes.
The magnificent mountain known as "La Concha" (the shell) is part of a range that extends across the skyline to the village of Ojén. Take the road to Ojén and turn left into the beautiful park called Juanar, where the mountainside is covered in pine trees, pinsapos, walnut and olive trees, as well as wild orchids - and some wild animals, including Hispanic wild goats, eagles and Royal owls.
Sedella is a town on the beautiful Ruta Mudejar in the Axarquia comarca. It's positioned 700m above sea level and was possibly once fortified with a large area of farmland at the foot of the town known as Sedelia or Xedelia.
Velez-Malaga is market town situated 20km east of Malaga city and 5km inland from Torre del Mar. There are a number of hotels and B&Bs in Velez-Malaga with accommodation to suit couples and families. many are pet friendly.
Totalán is part of the Ruta de la Pasa (Raisin route). This small but beautiful town is surrounded by vineyards, almond groves and paseros (raisin drying areas). The town has an Arabic heritage, with its narrow, steep, winding streets and whitewashed houses.
Salares is part of the Ruta Mudejar in the Axarquia comarca; it is situated on the edge of the Tejeda National Park. It is one of many towns in the Axarquia which shows its Arabic heritage clearly, with steep, narrow streets; in some places steps have been added to replace dangerously uneven surfaces.
As you drive into Velez Malaga you may noticed tram line that connects the town with its coastal sister town in Torre del Mar. No need to slow down and look both ways before crossing. Construction began in 2003 of the 6km and 12 stations the southern phase between the two towns opened on 11 October 2006 at a cost of 46 million € and closed in 4th June 2012.
This hill village, part of the Ruta Turistica del Sol y el Aguacate, enjoyed the height of its fortunes from the 18th century until the beginning of the 19th century. In fact, such was Macharaviaya's status that it was known as "little Madrid".
To the north of the lake is the village of Periana, on the river Guaro which provides the reservoir with its water. The lush land and excellent climate provide perfect conditions for the lemon and orange groves and cultivation of other fruit trees, enhancing the beauty of the landscape even further.
The town of Moclinejo is set on a peak of the Piedras Blancas hills, between olive groves, almond groves and vineyards. The town is also the starting point of the Ruta de la Pasa (Raisin Route). The town has strong Muslim origins, although the meaning of its name is not clear. It may have come about when inhabitants from Moclín, a town in Granada, moved to Moclinejo.
The town of El Borge is situated at the foot of the Cerro de Cutar mountain, on the border of the Axarquia and Montes de Malaga comarcas, and is known as the "raisin capital" because the town is one of the largest producers of Muscatel raisins.
