Enrique de Melchor

Enrique Jiménez Ramirez, known as Enrique de Melchor, was born in Marchena in 1951. However he only lived there until he was twelve when he went to Madrid where his father was the resident guitarist in Manolo Caracol's flamenco tablao, called Los Canasteros.

Motril Beaches

Motril's coastal strip has several beaches, the two closest to the town itself being Playa Granada and Playa Poniente. The latter is better developed, but the area is not aesthetic enough for discerning international tourists. The Gran Hotel (****) is the best on the coast, very comfortable and reasonably priced but its location lacks inspiration. Ideal for a night halt or a business meeting.

El Sordera de Jerez

Manuel Soto Sordera was born in 1927 in the Barrio Santiago, the very core of the gypsy population in Jerez de la Frontera. He was born in a Casa de Vecino, or tenement block, which were typical dwellings for the underprivileged, where family life was centered on a courtyard that was shared by ten or fifteen families, most commonly gypsy.

The Hofsaess Tennis Academy is a centre for aspiring players founded by the former German team trainer Klaus Hofsaess and his wife. The training includes tennis practice, fitness workouts and general conditioning.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is an extreme sport which involves racing over water on a surfboard pulled by a kite. Experts can achieve speeds of 80km per hour and leap into the air to perform somersaults and manoeuvres up to 40m above the water's surface.

Maracena

Maracena is a predominantly agricultural village. Originally known as Maratiena, it was an important Roman settlement and remained so during the Moorish era, when it was known as Marasana. The village has a population of around 19,300.
