History - Prehistory

Pia Beck

The legendary Dutch pianist Pia Beck owned the famous Blue Note Bar, which was situated in the Pasaje Begoña (now Pasaje Gil Vicente). This popular basement club's centrepiece was two grand pianos, one of which became a bar top: Pia would often entertain her clients on the other.

Carmen Thyssen Museum

Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza, one of the world's foremost art collectors, now has her own eponymous museum in Malaga, which opened in March 2011. The paintings are from her personal collection, amassed over the past 30 years.

Plaza de Toros (La Malagueta)

La Malagueta itself was built in 1874, by the architect Joaquín Rucoba. The first fight took place on 11th June 1876, and the matadors who fought were Rafael Molina, Antonio Carmona, Luque El Gordito, and Manuel Rodriguez. A century later in 1976 the site was declared an Historic Artistic Monument, and in 1981, it was declared an Official Site of Cultural Interest.

Brazo del Este Natural Area

The Brazo del Este is located 20 km south of Seville in the Guadalquivir river estuary, which is an area with one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the Iberian peninsula. This former branch (brazo) of the Guadalquivir is east (este) of the river and is now a reed-fringed lagoon and wetland area surrounded by rice plains and farmland.

Rus

The economy and culture of Rus are rooted in olive growing, olive oil production and textiles. Its proximity to and good road links with Úbeda and Linares mean that trade routes are well established with these municipalities. It has about 3,500 inhabitants.
