History of Gor

Human settlements in this area date back to Neanderthal times, as evidenced by the remains at Peña del Escarmiento. There are also Neolithic remains at Las Angosturas. At Cortijo Colorado, the remains of Iberian, Roman and Byzantine settlements can be seen. Moors and, later, Christians also occupied these lands.

Aguilón Golf Course

The verdant colour of the fairways and greens contrasts spectacularly with the backdrop of the hillsides of the Sierra Aguilón at this well designed course that integrates perfectly into its natural environment. With more than 100 bunkers, six large lakes and numerous natural gullies to negotiate, playing a round here is an unforgettable experience. It is a very attractive course with wonderful views over the Mediterranean, and although the general layout is a comfortable one, players of all levels will find their game challenged in different ways.

Casa Morisca

This three-star hotel was originally a morisco residence – Moors who stayed on after the Christian reconquest by the Catholic monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. With just 14 rooms, the beautifully restored Granada house epitomises the intimate atmosphere of the Albaicin, with its narrow streets and centuries-old houses. The interior courtyard has a morisco pool which dates from when the house was first built.

El Coronil

El Coronil is home to the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Consolación that uses 'tridacna' muscle shells, known to be the largest species in the world, as baptismal fonts. They were supposedly brought over from the Philippines in the nineteenth century by a merchant sailor. It has about 4, 800 inhabitants.

Mistral Beach Marbella

Located between San Pedro Alcántara and Puerto Banús , surrounded by palm trees and panoramic sea views, Mistral attracts a wide variety of people, including families. It has been open for 10 years and is famous for its beautifully presented seafood dishes, as well as Italian food. Music is chill-out style with live music in summer.

Cabalgata de Reyes de Higuera de la Sierra

All over Andalusia (and other parts of Spain), processions known as 'cabalgatas', travel through the streets of towns and villages usually on the evening of the 5th January. The processions are usually a mix of fantasy and biblical floats, not forgetting a float carrying each of the Three Kings.

Antiguo Convento de las Capuchinas

The Capuchin Mothers settled in the Capuchin Convent in 1682. At first, it was under the patronage of the Town Hall, but later passed to Juan Moreno Ponce de León. With the transfer of the Capuchin Mothers in 1982 to their convent in Córdoba.

Buddhist Stupa

The Benalmádena stupa was designed to be the largest Buddhist stupa in the western world. The story behind the stupa goes back to 1990 when a Buddhist master came to Spain to give talks to the faithful in Vélez-Málaga. In Vélez, there is a Buddhist meditation centre.
