The Iglesia de Santiago Apostol is one of the oldest in Almeria city, and was founded by the Reyes Catolicos (Catholic Kings) in 1494, just five years after they recaptured the city from the Moors. It was located in an area which had a largely morisco population (Moors who converted to Christianity after the Reconquest).
The Márgena fort, dating back to the Nasrid period, is located in the fertile orchards of the Márgena or Mahina plain. This area is irrigated by a Muslim irrigation canal of the same name. Since the sixteenth century, the name of the Márgena neighbourhood has appeared in various chronicles, such as the Books of Survey and Distribution by Madoz, and the sketch of the Marquis of La Ensenada’s land registry.
The church of Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios is close by in the Plaza San Francisco. It was built in the 18th Century of local sandstone, which is rich in iron ore. As you walk around the outside walls, you will see many pieces of iron ore still embedded in the stone blocks.

This marine themed mural can be found on a wall of the Edificio Vista Africa located on Calle Matias Prat which is near to the Puerto deportivo and the Punta Doncella lighthouse. Suitably, for its location, the mural depicts a 30m high lighthouse and the title refers to the time that the sea is in darkness during the time it takes for the illuminating beam of the lighthouse to revolve.

Bodega Guerola, which clings to the corner Calle de las Mercedes and Calle San Miguel, is a beautiful and somewhat inviting old tavern that was founded in 1962. The Nerja Tourist Office is located in Calle Carmen 1, Nerja. It is open Monday to Sunday 10:00 to 14:00 hrs. The staff are helpful. There is a pad of Nerja town maps on the counter, help yourself to one if the office is busy.

The municipal cemetery of Benalmádena has no religious restrictions; Muslims, Catholics, Jews and atheists are all buried alongside each other. This is also an international cemetery, so regardless of religion or nationality, anyone can be buried here. Although there are a few Muslim graves in the main part of the cemetery, there is also a separate Muslim burial ground.
Delicious Almond Soup Recipe. Ajo Blanco Boil the milk with the cinnamon and lemon peel a few hours before making the soup and leave the cinnamon and lemon to soak to obtain more flavour. Right before serving, heat the milk mixture; take out the lemon peel and the cinnamon stick and add the ground almonds.
