Explorers - Ferdinand Magellan and Seville

Ferdinand Magellan (c. 1480 - 27 April 1521) was a Portuguese explorer who organised the Spanish expedition to the East Indies from 1519 to 1522, resulting in the first circumnavigation of the Earth, completed by Juan Sebastián Elcano. 

After his proposed expeditions to the Spice Islands (specifically, the Moluccas in modern-day Indonesia) were repeatedly rejected by King Manuel of Portugal, Magellan turned to Charles I, the young King of Spain (and future Holy Roman Emperor).

Granada City Cathedral

The Cathedral is located in the centre of the Muslim area and dates back to 1523. It has a nave and four aisles, a crossing and circular apse. Alonso Cano built the main façade with sculptures by Duque Cornejo, Risueño and Verdiguier while the only tower of the two planned ended up half finished. On the northern side, there is La Puerta del Perdón, a magnificent work of Diego de Siloé who also built La Puerta de San Jerónimo.

Petrol and diesel fuel prices in Spain

Almost all garages sell petrol at the maximum price permitted by the government. This can vary. As a general rule, most stations are self service. The exception is in some rural areas. Credit cards are universally accepted and tipping is not expected – regardless of what you might read in a guide book.

Hotels in Huelva

Huelva is a port city which holds an important place in the history of Andalucia, as the area from where Columbus sailed to American in 1492. In the 19th and early 20th century, it was an important mining centre, and some colonial buildings and quays from that era remain, including the Muelle de Riotinto.

Andres Segovia Guitar Competition

In November the Andres Segovia International Classical Guitar Competition takes place in La Heredura's beautiful San José Church. This annual event attracts leading classical guitarists under 35 years of age from around the world and its objective is to promote the diffusion and study of the guitar.

Arroyo Vaquero and Enmedio - Estepona districts

Arroyo Vaquero is a coastal district to the west of the town of Estepona comprising beaches, historical landmarks, hotels, commercial centres, a new hospital and existing housing communities including villas and apartments on both coastal and mountain sides as well as new ongoing residential developments.

Arriving in Estepona by Car

Estepona is located on the coast about 20km west of Marbella. The town has a bypass for through traffic along the coast. The town is best entered from the east (slip road off A-7 coastal highway then under bridge) or from the west turn right at 'Estepona' km 152 roundabout by Shell petrol station.You will now be entering the town via the old coast road.

Getting There

Puerto Banus is located on the Costa del Sol between Marbella and San Pedro de Alcantara, just off the Autovía del Mediterráneo A-7 road. It is easy to reach by car. If driving from San Pedro in the direction of Marbella, take the clearly signposted exit 174 off the A-7. If you are driving from Marbella towards San Pedro, come off at exit 175 and follow the signs. Both exits will bring you directly into the eastern end of Puerto Banus by Playa Puerto Banus.

Apartments

Fuengirola’s tourist journey began all the way back in the 1960s, and today it is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the Costa del Sol. The town was originally a fishing village, the centre of which is the Plaza de la Constitución, although the old fishing village isn’t visible today.

Renowned for its tapas bars, Malaga offers visitors some of the tastiest tapas in Spain, and favourites such as boquerones, tortilla, jamon Serrano and fresh oysters can all be found in and around the city centre.  Some of the better tapas joints are hidden away in the back streets of Malaga, and they are well worth seeking out. Try a tapa in one of the following bars.

Laguna de Rincón Natural Reserve

One of a series of inland saline lakes dotted around southern Cordoba province, the 3.2ha Laguna del Rincón and its protected environs covers a total of 138ha and attracts numerous wildfowl in winter. It is also an important breeding site for birds. Like Laguna de Zóñar and Laguna Amarga, it is permanent. There is a bird hide at the lake.
