Joe "King" Carrasco (born Joseph Charles Teutsch on December 6, 1953) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter widely recognized as the "King of Tex-Mex Rock 'n' Roll." Renowned for his high-energy stage acrobatics and infectious blend of garage rock, cumbia, reggae, and Latin rhythms, Carrasco has been a driving force in cross-border roots music for over four decades. In recent years, he has established strong roots in Southern Spain as a recurring favorite across Andalucian music festivals, while continuing to take his high-energy rock 'n' roll into international humanitarian zones.
Early Life and Tex-Mex Roots
Raised in the West Texas town of Dumas, Carrasco began playing in local garage bands during his early teens. Frequent trips to the beaches of Mexico exposed him to Latin beats, cumbias, and traditional Mexican sounds, which he fused with American rock and roll.
Adopting his stage moniker as a play on Texan border lore, he formed Joe King Carrasco & El Molino in the late 1970s, releasing the debut LP Tex-Mex Rock & Roll in 1978. The record caught the ear of UK tastemakers, launching his international profile.
MTV Era, Stiff Records, and Mainstream Breakthrough
In 1979, Carrasco assembled The Crowns, introducing a Farfisa organ-driven sound he dubbed "Nuevo Wavo." The group became one of the first American bands signed to the legendary British indie label Stiff Records.
Carrasco’s signature hit "Party Weekend" (1983) became an MTV anthem, propelling the band onto Saturday Night Live, Austin City Limits, and major festival stages worldwide. His 1982 album Synapse Gap famously featured Michael Jackson singing background harmonies on the track "Don't Let a Woman (Make a Fool Out of You)".
Known for wild live performances, Carrasco routinely leaps off drum risers, climbs tables and speakers, and marches through audiences mid-guitar solo. He was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2003 and with The Crowns in 2012.
"Tequila Reggae" and Latin Fusion
Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, time spent living and traveling in Central America shifted his music toward political commentary and Caribbean sounds. Albums like Bordertown (1985) and Bandido Rock (1987) showcased a genre-bending mix of ska, reggae, and salsa that Carrasco famously labeled "Tequila Reggae." Joe King Carrasco has become a popular visitor to Andalucia and Madrid and other cities in Spain. He has headlined all seven July editions of the annual Pueblos Blancos Music Festival, international grassroots music festival hosted in Ronda and across the whitewashed villages of the Serranía de Ronda and based in Montejaque.
During these village festival stops, Carrasco is known for taking his guitar directly into the audience, leading spontaneous mambo trains and dancing through municipal plazas. He also performs intimate pre-festival and post-festival club dates at live music clubs in Spain notable the popular Louie Louie rock venue in Estepona.
Frontline Humanitarian Tours in Ukraine
Expanding his international outreach into direct humanitarian support, Carrasco joined forces in late 2025 and January 2026 with Carlisle-based UK rock outfit Hardwicke Circus and Stiff Records co-founder Dave Robinson. Partnering with UK charities including Mission Aid for Ukraine and Hope Full, Carrasco embarked on high-risk solidarity tours across war-torn Ukraine, performing for civilians and soldiers in cities such as Kyiv, Lviv, and Kharkiv, as well as active military zones near the Donetsk frontline.
Playing acoustic and electrifying sets in underground bunkers, community centers, schools, and military posts, Carrasco brought his trademark Tex-Mex rock 'n' roll spirit into active conflict areas.
Beyond performing, Carrasco and his wife Nicole spearheaded fundraising drives alongside UK partner organizations to deliver direct material aid, helping purchase, equip, and personally deliver converted 4x4 casualty evacuation vehicles directly to front line Ukrainian troops to assist with medical evacuations and supply lines.
