Casa Museo y Centro de Estudios sobre Gerald Brenan
This initiative aims to celebrate the life and work of the writer Gerald Brenan, and also serves as a cultural attraction for visitors. Yegen is home to an old inn where Brenan stayed before renting the house that would later become known as 'Casa del Inglés'. The inn has been the subject of a project to rehabilitate and open it to the public as a house museum and study centre dedicated to the famous British writer, author of South of Granada. The Alpujarra de la Sierra Council intends to revive interest in Brenan, who has been almost forgotten, and to promote him as a cultural reference for travellers and scholars of his work. Until recently, only a plaque on the house where Brenan lived in Yegen during the 1920s commemorated his time in this region of the Alpujarra. The council has also created a walking tour that provides an overview of the British scholar and the town of Yegen itself. This includes Manuel Juliana’s house and the old inn where Brenan stayed before renting the house in which he lived during his years in Yegen, and which he later immortalised in Al sur de Granada. It is located on the A-4130.
