Malaga Airport Statistics
Málaga Airport is the fourth most important airport in Spain after Madrid, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. It is the top international airport in the south of Spain, handling 85% of the international air traffic in Andalucia.
All the Andalucia airports increased their passenger movements up to a peak in 2007 before the financial crash. Malaga Airport again increased movements year on year from 2009 and by 2014 it had surpassed the 2007 preak. This was inspite of the AVE high speed train from Madrid to Malaga which was inaugurated in 2007. From then every year from 2014 to 2019 it set new passenger movement records. 2020 saw a large drop due to the Coronavirus pandemic with a partial recovery in 2021.
Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport closed 2024 with the highest traffic in its history, with an increase of 11.5% in passengers and 8.2% in operations. In 2024, there were 24,923,774 passenger movements (arrivals plus departures) and 174,915 flights. Another milestone was the highest volume of baggage handled (outbound) in the airport's more than 105-year history, with almost 6 million (5,998,006) checked-in pieces of luggage. The previous record was set in 2023 with 5,521,041 outbound bags handled. Nearly all passengers were on commercial flights. Of these, 4,234,592 traveled to or from a Spanish city (5.2% more than in 2023) and 20,636,953 traveled from a foreign airport (+13%). In terms of international traffic, the markets with the greatest demand in absolute terms were the UK market (5,691,371 passengers), followed by Germany (1,967,294), the Netherlands (1,479,693), France (1,360,672) and Italy (1,289,204). In terms of passenger growth, the Czech Republic and Poland recorded the largest increases of 82.4% and 56.4%, respectively.

'Passenger movements' refers to a passenger arriving or departing. Since most passengers arrive and depart (or depart and then arrive) the number of 'passengers' using the airport is about half. Passenger movement is the standard method of airport reporting worldwide, it is often misinterpreted in the press.
