Pinar de Cánavas Natural Monument

Pinar de Cánavas Natural Monument

Located on the fringes of the Sierra Mágina Natural Park, this centuries-old woodland of Aleppo pine trees (pinus halepensis) is one of the best preserved of its kind in Andalucia. The trees, aged between 100 and 250 years, are home to a rich variety of birds.

Access
Take the A316 from Jaen and turn off on to the A320 towards Jimena. At Jimena, turn south on the J3220 towards Albánchez de Úbeda, taking the right turn-off to Pilar de Moro, soon after leaving Jimena. This minor road passes through the pine woods.

Flora
The woodland is comprised principally of Aleppo pines.

Fauna
Bonnellis' eagles and woodpigeons are among the most common species in the pine woodland. Winter visitors include blackcaps, redwings, song thrushes, common chiffchaffs and robins, all of which inhabit the neighbouring extensive olive groves.
