Los Escullos

Los Escullos is a small cluster of houses overlooking the jagged Almeria coastline, a few km north of San Jose. Sitting under the extinct volcano Cerro del Fraile (at 493m, El Fraile peak is the highest of the Sierra del Cabo de Gata), it has a certain charm.

Old Town Walk

Park the car in the underground car park under the seafront promenade and walk through to the pedestrianised Calle Real. Where this road crosses Calle Terraza is a good starting point. Have a look at the shops on Calle Terraza and pedestrianised Calle Real, and stop in at one of the traditional bars on Calle Caridad for an ice-cold fino (sherry) and tapa. Walk up to the attractive Plaza de las Flores.

Tetanus and Diphtheria

As everywhere, in Andalucia anyone with injuries such as deep cuts, gashes or burns is advised to get a tetanus vaccine, particularly if they can't remember when they had their last vaccination.

History of Arjonilla

The town is in a first-class archaeological zone, the cradle of the Iberian civilization, where multiple Iberian settlements and funerary nuclei, such as the nearby Cerro Venate, have been discovered.

Monda - History

The site of the town was originally occupied by an Ibero-Roman fortified enclosure established in the 3rd to 1st Centuries BC by the Romans. This was to protect the indigenous Iberian population and to defend the road leading to the more important town of Coín.

Eating Out

Trying to order a vegetarian meal in a Spanish restaurant can be a challenge - just explaining to your bemused waiter you don’t want any dishes containing meat or fish can be problematical. Some good phrases to learn are: No como ni carne ni pescado (I don’t eat meat or fish), and ¿Esto lleva carne o pescado? (Does this have meat or fish in it?).

Casa de Puga

Casa de Puga is a tapas institution in Almeria. The bar/restaurant on Calle Jovellanos (no 7), which opened in 1870, is deeply traditional in both decor and cuisine. Originally the building was used for parking carriages downstairs, and as an inn upstairs. From 1900 it was owned by Don Juan Puga Antequera, who founded the current restaurant with his wife Maria Lopez Romero.

History

The towns of Restábal, Melegís and Saleres did not come together as El Valle until 10 October 1972, when they were united under the same council, which adopted the name El Valle and established its headquarters in Restábal.

The bridge was built in 1893 as part of the Linares-Baeza-Almería Line, and next to the station to connect Almería with the rest of Spain. VAT Refund at Malaga Airport

If you have been saving your receipts in order to recover money you paid for IVA (VAT) taxes while in Spain, you’ll find the tax office in Terminal 3, departures, near the security check station. Have all your receipts ready and arrive early to be sure you have time to process your request as you could have to wait in a queue depending on the time of day.

History

Although there is no reliable data on the founding of Carataunas, it can be dated to sometime during the Muslim domination of the peninsula, during the Arab-Andalusian period.
