Castillo de la Aragonesa

The fourteenth-century castle is currently privately owned, and its structure has undergone extensive damage, raising concerns for its long-term conservation. In 1993 the Junta de Andalucía granted special recognition to the castles of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.

Cathedral de la Encarnacion, Almeria

This fortified behemoth of a basilica was designed in the 16th century with a dual role: as a place of worship, but also to protect the citizens when pirates attacked the city of Almeria after the Reconquest. Built in 1524, after an earthquake destroyed the previous structure, the cathedral is constructed, like so many churches in Spain, on the site of a mosque.

Fishing License in Andalucia

There are different types of licenses to fish from the shore (Class 1), a boat (Class 2), a group of people on boat (Class 3) or spearfishing (Class 4). In addition to possessing this license, the people who carry out this activity must respect a series of restrictions regarding the volume of catches, the minimum sizes, the seasons and the species allowed.

Tower of La Calahorra

The Tower of La Calahorra rises up at the south of the Roman bridge, the far end from the city centre. It is a fortified gate originally built by the Moors (Almohads) and extensively restored by King Enrique II of Castile in 1369 to defend the city from attack by his brother Pedro I the Cruel from the South. It was origionally an arched gate between two towers. Enrique II added a third cylindrical shaped tower connecting the outer two.

Rural Phone and Internet Access

Phone and broadband internet connection is now commonplace in the large cities and in the highly populated coasted areas of Andalucia. However, there are still some far-flung rural areas where internet and even land line connection is not guaranteed. Telefónica, Spanish equivalent of BT, is the main national land line provider.

The Alhambra - The Alcazaba

The Alcazaba, or fortress, is the oldest part of the Alhambra. It was built in the mid-13th century by the Sultan Alhamar, the founder of the Nasrid dynasty, after he fled from northern Andalucia and established what was to be the last Moorish stronghold against the Christian crusaders.

Cueva del Gabar

They are in a still better state of preservation, but you may only visit them with a guide. However, if you're interested, the tourist information office at Vélez Rubio, or the town hall at Vélez Blanco can advise on a guide who will provide you with a rope and ladder to get you up the sheer rock face; which is one of the reasons of course, why they have survived more or less intact.

How to get to the Feria

Don't even try to park near the Feria, unless you have a micro-car like a Smart which will fit into the smallest spaces. Instead, leave it at the Charco de la Pava car park, and catch the shuttle bus to the main recinto. Bear in mind that the police will be out in force with breathalyser checkpoints, so don't drink and drive.
