Torre del Reloj

According to local tradition, the clock tower is located where the minaret of the Arab mosque that existed in this square once stood. Built in brick and stone, it was completed in 1534. It features a fabulous imperial coat of arms, which shows the lineage of the Trastamara and the Habsburgs on the right-hand side.

Getting there

To visit Gaucin from the Costa del Sol, turn inland at Sabinillas (A7 km145), go up the A377 and drive past Manilva and the AP7 motorway toll exit and the turning for Casares. The road skirts Sierra Crestelina and then drops steeply down to cross the River Genal before the long windy climb up to the village.

Citadel

Ronda is divided into three parts, and the old Moorish citadel, La Ciudad, should be explored first. If, like most visitors, you drive up from the coast, the first part of town you will encounter is the Barrio de San Francisco. Park here, and enter the fortifications on foot through the Moorish gate, the Puerta de Almocábar, with its characteristic horseshoe arch.

Ermita de la Cruz

The chapel has an open square plan with arches on its four sides, which supported the dome, today transformed into a hipped roof, and crowned with a cross. From it, you can enjoy excellent views over the orange groves and the Andarax River.

The Marina

The Marina is located in the centre of the seafront promenade that leads eastward all the way to Torremolinos and westwards all along the front of Benalmadena. The marina is a very pleasant place for a stroll and to watch the boats. There are numerous bars and restaurants open at lunch time and in the evening.

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

The church was erected in the sixteenth century, but was practically destroyed during the Civil War, so that from the time of its construction only the main door remains, made in 1531 by Juan de Marquina.
