Chauchina

Chauchina takes its name from the Latin word “sanciuos” which means “willow”. This is due to the large amount of willow trees in the area. Many relics such as coins, metals and pots from the Neolithic era have been discovered here. However, it was during the Muslim occupation that Chauchina as we know it was born.

Torvizcón is the largest town in the Contraviesa, the part of the Alpujarras between the Sierra Nevada and the sea. The village’s traditional whitewashed houses are silhouetted against the Sierra Nevada, and from anywhere on the outskirts visitors can enjoy amazing views, including over the Guadalfeo river.

Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park

With a total surface area of 209,920 hectares and covering almost a fifth of Jaén province, this is Spain’s largest protected area and one of its most extensive forested zones. Located in eastern Jaén province, it connects the Sierra Morena and the Subbética mountain ranges. The highest peak in this immense park is Pico Empanada at 2,107m and the entire park is higher than 600m. Recognizing its exceptional ecological importance, it was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1983 and created a natural park in 1989. Barren rocky crests and vast pine forests will strike visitors’ first impressions, but the area’s botanical importance within Andalusia is matched only by the Sierra Nevada, with a fifth of the vascular plants in the Iberian Peninsula found in the Sierra de Cazorla Natural Park.

Sanlúcar de Barrameda

Situated at the northern tip of the sherry triangle, 8 km from Chipiona, the delightful small town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda is flanked by the Guadalquivir estuary. The speciality tipple here is the distinctive manzanilla wine, which acquires its dry, slightly salty tang from the seaside environment and the moist poniente wind. The town is equally famed for its excellent seafood, for which manzanilla is (coincidentally!) the ideal accompaniment.

Coronavirus - Closures

On Friday 13th March Andalucia the regional government had announced that the Alhambra de Granada, Picasso Malaga, Bellas Artes Sevilla, Medinat al-Zahra in Córdoba, Real Alcázar in Sevilla and all the 27 museums and monuments managed by the Junta de Andalucia were closed from immediate effect.

Gorafe

Gorafe is famous for its various dolmens and cave houses as well as its impressive natural environment which is perfect for hiking. A delight for history-lovers, this village near Guadix, in the Altiplano of Granada province, has the highest concentration of dólmens in Spain and part of Europe – nearly 200 of the prehistoric burial chambers.

This white village, in the north of Cadiz province, is located in an area rich with wildlife, on the Embalse de Bornos (Bornos Resevoir), as well as offering many interesting historic sites. It has about 12,000 inhabitants.

La Cañada Golf Course

La Cañada is a fitting tribute to the people of Guadiaro who became golf addicts overnight with the emergence of Sotogrande. The full length Trent Jones course is located in the hills adjacent to Valderrama and is open to some wind. The long first hole sets the tone for a tough round of golf and the 4th is a trek into the unknown with no view of the green until the third shot.
