Traditional Festivals and Fiestas in Andalucia

In Andalucia, there's a party every day - whether it's to celebrate a harvest (mostly in the autumn - grapes, olives, chestnuts, mushrooms) - a saint's day, or the town's own annual feria, when every town and village puts on a show, with casetas, sherry and dancing. Over 3,000 fiestas are celebrated every year in Andalucia, including fairs, pilgrimages, carnivals, mock battles between Moors and Christians.

Gardens in Almeria

The main park in Almeria itself is the Parque Nicolas Salmeron, in the city centre. It is named after the Almerian politician and philosopher who served (albeit briefly - a month and a half) as the president of the First Republic in 1873. The large, landscaped park is made up of two parts: the Parque Viejo (Paseo de San Luis and los Jardines del Malecon), with lots of ficus and terebinth trees; and the Parque Nuevo, built when the port was extended in 1924, with palms and ornamental plants. The two parts are separated by a pillared fountain called La Fuente de los Peces, on calle Real.

Gardens in Cadiz

In the ancient walled City of Cadiz, the gardens to visit are the Parque Genoves and the Alameda Apodaca, a large avenue laid out with gardens with sections in the romantic style. In the oldest part of town there are also beautiful patios. In the Faculty of Medicine there is a remarkable specimen of a Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco).

Cortes de la Frontera

Sandwiched between the Alcornocales natural park and Sierra de Grazalema natural park in the far western reaches of Malaga province is the pueblo blanco (white town) of Cortes de la Frontera. It is in a superb vantage point overlooking the sweeping Guadiaro valley below, with a spectacular backdrop of the Serranía de Ronda mountains.

Benaoján

As the name suggests (the prefix Ben- found across the region derives from the Arabic 'ibn', 'son of'), this is another village of Moorish origins. Located very near to Montejaque, the settlement can be found in two halves. The original village was built on a mountainside with the lower community in the Guadiaro river valley that grew up around the railway station.

Gardening in Andalucia

Gardening has never been so popular, especially in the UK where it dominates the airwaves and makes celebrities out of green-fingered presenters. But no-one can deny that gardens are special places. Being able to inhale the scent of flowers, watch birds from the kitchen window or merely sit outside on a sunny day, improves the quality of life beyond all measure. Whether you live in a palatial villa with sweeping lawns (and a resident gardener!) or a small apartment with a modest sized balcony, the Mediterranean climate is wonderfully conducive to creating your very own haven of colour, scent and soothing visual beauty.

Ronda Nightlife

As its population becomes increasingly younger and younger, so the lifestyle of Ronda changes, most notably its nightlife. The first-time visitor will be surprised, considering Spain's reputation as a nation of late-night carousers, to find Ronda's streets nearly deserted by 11pm, and retire to their accommodation slightly baffled.

History - Phoenicians to Carthaginians

During the 11th century BC, the first contacts between the Phoenicians and Iberia were made. This lead to the emergence of towns and cities on the southern coast including Gadir.
