Carnival
Nerja Carnival traditionally runs from a Thursday to Sunday in February. The carnival opens on Thursday with a 'pregon' speech by a local or visiting artist. On Friday there is a carnival fancy dress competition and the crowning of the "Momo King" and the "Carnival Nymphs" in three categories (children, teenagers, adults). Music, dancing and masks are everywhere in Nerja. Not to be missed is the grand carnival parade through the town centre. On the last day of Carnival, Nerja has a unique and curious tradition which is the burial of the Chanquete (small fish) on the beach. People dress up in mourning and cry over its death. The Town Hall produce a detailed printed Carnival brochure with time and locations of all the events. The dates in 2024 are 8th to 11th February 2024. More info about Carnivals in Andalucia.
