Ermita de San Torcuato

Ermita de San Torcuato

The San Torcuato complex, consisting of old and new chapels and an underground monastic complex of 25 rooms, is located in a place known as Face Retama. According to ancient tradition, the first Bishop of Guadix, Torcuato, lived and was martyred in this spot, which explains its remote location.

he complex has undergone several phases of construction. The first spanned the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, during which time a monastery was created by uniting possible medieval dwellings scattered throughout the hill. T

he second phase occurred throughout the eighteenth century and involved the expansion of the sanctuary church. The third phase, in contemporary times, involved the large-scale restoration of the sanctuary and the hermitage. It is located southeast of the town.
