Estación Paleontológica Valle Del Río Fardes

The Fardes River Valley Palaeontological Station (EPVRF) is owned by the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute. Since 2010, the station has coordinated research, outreach activities and specialised field teaching.

Since beginning its research in 2001, the station has recovered more than 3,500 fossilised bones representing 41 animal species, including 24 large mammals. Notable finds include giraffes, rhinoceroses, mammoths, sabre-toothed cats, cheetahs, zebras, hyenas, badgers, wolves, jackals and lynxes, as well as other primitive species.

The Fonelas P-1 site offers excellent conditions for observing the landscape, allowing for expanded educational content and a comprehensive overview of the region's geological and landscape evolution. It is located west of the town.
