El Patio de los Arrayanes (Courtyard of the Myrtles)
by Fiona Flores Watson
Situated at the heart of the Comares Palace, this rectangular patio features a pool and hedges of evergreen myrtle on its two long sides, with a porticoed gallery at either end. The still water in the pool, which reflects the tiled porticos at each end, almost reaches the columns so it seems to be floating, in an infinity pool-mirror effect. The courtyard, with its white marble pavement and intricate stucco arches, was probably built by Mohammed V, whose heroic deeds are referenced in a poem in the North Gallery. It was the hub for diplomatic and political activity in the Alhambra; ambassadors were received here.
