Generalife
by Fiona Flores Watson
The Nasrid summer palace and gardens are located at the far eastern limit of the Alhambra complex. The building itself is set on a south-facing hill. The gardens, which were designed to be a productive working estate with fruit and vegetables, are fed by irrigation channels or acequias. Don’t miss the iconic “Water Stairway” whose hollowed-out stone bannisters carry flowing water – wonderfully cooling to the touch on a hot day. Part of the terraced orchards planted in Nasrid times still survive to this day. The open-air auditorium hosts the Granada Music and Dance Festival in June/July, with evening performances in this beautiful setting.
