Patio de los Leones (Courtyard of the Lions)
Probably the most famous and recognisable patio of the Alhambra complex, the Courtyard of the Lions consists of a forest of elegant columns surrounding a fountain, and a small pavilion at each end (east/west), with a circular fountain. The 12 white marble lions of the central fountain, from whose mouths spout water, represent the sun, from whence all life springs, and the number may refer to the 12 signs of the zodiac. The water’s acoustic as well as aesthetic quality was highly valued, and it symbolised spiritual purity. The courtyard was the heart of the sultan’s private quarters; originally it would have been carpeted in colourful flowers and aromatic herbs.
