Alhambra Alta (Upper Alhambra)

In Nasrid times, this eastern section of the fortified complex was the densely populated medina, with mosque, public baths and markets, grand mansions of high-ranking officials, and soldiers’ quarters. Its entrance was through the Wine Gate, next to Carlos V palace, and although little remains today structurally, you  can still make out the Palace of the Abencerrages walls, the Polinario bath house, and the ever-present water channels. These were essential in an area that was not irrigated, hence its popular name, the secano (dry area); the Acequia Real flowed under Calle Real. The main Nasrid palace was converted into a convent, now used as a Parador hotel.
