Valle Romano - Estepona districts
by Sinéad Mangan-McHale
Whilst nowadays the words Valle Romano (Roman Valley) may be considered synonymous with golf, the name reflects the Roman roots that run deep along the Andalucian coastline. Their influence laid the foundations for Andalucía’s economic growth.
Today, this growth is evident in the development of a renowned 18-hole golf course and multiple urbanizacións (housing complexes) to support those travelling to the Valle Romano district. The district is conveniently located on the western side of Estepona, on the north side of the A-7 coastal road, with easy access to Estepona town and nearby beaches. It is less than six kilometres (approximately 11 minutes by car) from Puerto Deportivo de Estepona (Estepona Port) and three kilometres from Guadalobón Beach, one of several black-sand pebbled beaches along Estepona’s western coastline. Set on the mountain side of the A-7 coastal road, giving visitors impressive views of the Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja (mountain range), the district is bordered by two arroyos (streams), Arroyo Vaquero and Arroyo de Enmedio flowing down from the mountains.
Golf
The Valle Romano Golf Course is the centre of attraction in this district. It is accessible via the A-7 coastal road (note there is no direct access from the AP-7 toll road) turning right onto Calle Ecuador which leads onto Calle Flaminio, turning left at the second roundabout onto Calle Villa Borghese and the entrance to the golf course.
Cabell B. Robinson designed the 60-hectare, 18-hole golf course within a five-kilometre circuit. The course is devised to be adaptable, making it enjoyable for amateurs and challenging for professionals. As with many of the golf courses in this region, Valle Romano offers extensive golfing facilities, with a fully equipped clubhouse, pro shop, restaurant, locker rooms, changing rooms, and sauna. The club also offers a floodlit practice range.
There are many accommodation choices for those looking to live or visit in the district and be close to the Valle Romano Golf Course. Ona Valle Romano Golf and Resort, an Aparthotel offering hotel hospitality with a range of different-sized apartments, is popular. Visitors can enjoy many holiday activities besides golf, such as swimming, paddle tennis, and various aquatic activities to entertain all ages. In addition to the resort, there are private complexes such as Valle Romano Green, Valle Romano Residences, Valle Romano 26, Penthouse Valle Romano, and Romano Golf Villas Cbuilt around or close to the course. Some properties have front-line views of the course, making them popular with golf enthusiasts. Properties are available for short—and long-term rent or purchase through local Agentes Inmobiliarios (real estate agents) and Airbnb. In addition, residents or visitors in the Habitat Villa Romano complex can easily access Azata Golf by crossing the Arroyo de Endemio via Calle Perú for an alternate golf course.
Another notable aspect of the Valle Romano district area is that while it is on the outskirts of Estepona Town, it is still close enough to easily visit the many restaurants, shops, and bars in the town. Many public or private car transport options exist in Estepona, which can take visitors to and from Valle Romano, including Estepona Taxis.
Transport
One significant advantage of Valle Romano District is that it is just on the outskirts of Estepona Town, making it convenient to the many restaurants, shops, and bars in the town. Being close to the A-7 coastal road, the town is easily accessible by car, taxi, and public transport.
In addition to hiring a car in Estepona or Malaga Airport or Gibraltar airport, Estepona taxis, and several firms offer minibus car or limousine private transfers to and from the airport and the surrounding areas. The Bolt and Uber Apps also work within the district.
There is an Estepona microbus service operating along A-7 stopping at the entrance to many of the Estepona western districts. E-1 Bus service operates along the A-7 coast road from Buenas Noches, passing Bahia Dorada, Arroyo Vaquero, Arena Beach, Valle Romano and Guadalabón on its way to Estepona town centre and terminating at Avenida Juan Carlos I.
There is also an Avanza-Portillo M-240 service from Estepona to La Linea which can be used to or from Sabinillas, Duquesa, Torrequadiaro, Sotogrande, San Roque and La Linea (for Gibraltar). This M-240 bus is not permitted to issue tickets to passengers for journeys entirely within the Estepona municipal district.More details.
For those who want to enjoy more of the sights of Andalucía, the district is close to the A-7 Coastal highway so visitors can easily access destinations on either side of Estepona. Along the coast to the west these include Sotogrande, Gibraltar, Tarifa and the golden sand beaches of Costa de la Luz. Along the coast to the east these include Marbella, and Malaga. They can also explore inland villages of Casares, Gaucin on the road to towards Ronda. Not forgetting the magnificent cities of Seville, Cordoba or Granada.
