Sueños de Libertad (Dreams of Freedom)

Located on the corner where Calle Zaragoza meets Calle  Valencia, this mural is painted on Edificio Caravaca. It is a tribute to gender equality. The 2013 mural entitled 'Fundación Antonia Guerrero' commemorates 20 years of the Antonia Guerrero Educational Foundation.

Dña. Antonia Guerrero Díaz, (1848 to 1928) left an inheritance to set up a foundation to help provide further education for Estepona women from families of little means. There are no photographs nor paintings of Antonia known to exist.

Sueños de Libertad was inaugurated in November 2016 and is a work by the local artist, Francisco Alarcon who has contributed other Murals and sculptures.

This romantic mural depicts two figures.  On one side is a woman who embodies Antonia Guerrero in her youth which looks inside and dreams to study and feel fulfilled in this area, and on the other side is a goldfinch which symbolic of her dreams of freedom.

The mural is eight metres high and painted using a wide range vivid colours which were intended to reflect the vitality of Guerrero herself.

Tenth: 'The testatrix, convinced that she has not been able to fullfil the mission that God entrusted to her in this world due to her lack of education, as women did not have the right to study for a degree in her time, which has been the greatest pain of her life, wishes that, now this right has been recognised, another woman should not suffer the same. For this purpose, she establishes a foundation in Estepona to finance the studies of poor women in the said town, giving preference to degrees in Law, Philosophy, and Letters'.

Reading Doña Antonia Guerrero's Will provided insight into her character. This short text reveals the human qualities of this enterprising woman:

To express these ideas and feelings, a dialogue is established between the figure of a goldfinch at the beginning of its flight and the portrait of Doña Antonia Guerrero. This emotional recreation expresses her dreamy, romantic youth and her desire for freedom and the development of her inner world, symbolised by the beauty of this familiar and beautiful bird.
