Pharmacias Farmacias (chemists in UK English, drugstores in American English) can be identified by a neon green cross and will provide medicines, including some without a doctor's prescription.

A prescription can be a private prescription issued by any doctor currently registered with one of the provincial 'Colegio Oficial Farmacueticos'. It can also be a prescription issued by a doctor on behalf of the Servicio Andaluz de Salud (National Health Service) in a public hospital or health centre. These SAS prescriptions usually subsidise the cost of the medicine.

Pharmacies can also give advice on ailments and suggest remedies. On the Costa del Sol and many other tourist areas, this advice may be given in English.

Every town in Andalusia (and Spain) has a local duty chemist, which is open 24 hours a day. In rural villages, the night duty rota may be shared between farmacias in nearby villages.

The duty farmacia rota is displayed in the window of all pharmacies. This is usually the name of the licensed pharmacist rather than the brand name of the farmacia, which can be confusing to a visitor, but the address will be the same. The list may also be published in the local newspaper.

At night, for security reasons, dispensing is likely to take place through a service hatch. If the doors are locked, look for this hatch on the front or side of the building. You may have to ring a bell for service.
